The “Underground” expansion of The Division will bring randomly generated missions. We present these “Underground Operations”.
At an E3 event for the “Tom Clancy” series, the developers discussed the Underground expansion of The Division. The focus was on the new endgame content “Underground Operations”. What is it about?
“Underground Operations” in The Division
The first paid expansion will start with “something very terrible”. The Division agents must find out what is going on. To this end, we will unlock a new area of the operations base early, granting us access to the underground: “Underground Operations”. This place is intended only for Division agents – you will not find the JTF here.
From this new area, you will start the underground missions: First, you select the difficulty. In addition to normal, hard, and challenging, “heroic” will be added: In a live gameplay demo, the developers presented this mode – however, it was a brief pleasure. The team led by Yannick Banchereau died within seconds – from a shotgun guy at level 35.
Now you select the number of phases: These determine how long you will be in the underground – that is, how many phases you want to play in it. But be careful: If you die, you have to start over at the base. The multi-phase missions should only be playable at higher difficulty levels. For better loot, you can invest target data.
Additionally, you can choose between “Directives”. These are modifiers that change the missions in different ways. The following were shown:
- Fog of War: HUD elements are removed, like the mini-map.
- Waste Not Want Not: This means you will receive less ammo. You lose all remaining bullets in a magazine if you reload prematurely.
- Mad Skills: When you use a skill, all skills receive a cooldown timer. When using an individual skill, those of your team members are also provided with cooldowns.
- Special Forces: Enemies receive certain types of ammunition.
- Sickness: Your health is continuously drained, down to the last segment.
Then you start the underground mission. This will be randomly generated in terms of layout and objective. You will also find collectibles in it that reveal the lore of this area.
In the presented gameplay, the agents’ task was to defend a generator and secure the area. A “completely new” weapon was also shown in action, about which more information will be provided in the future. Overall, the underground expansion is expected to bring a lot of fresh stuff for the agents to hunt. Including new gear sets.
The enemies are not the only threat underground: It is characterized by destruction, so you must watch out for dangers like sparking cables in the tight corridors.

The developers briefly touched on the upcoming incursion “Dragon’s Nest”: This leads you against the Cleaners. They have lost their leader, and now four others are vying for power. In this Incursion, we will encounter a flamethrower “Fire Truck”.
