Exotics are among the rarest and most coveted weapons in The Division 2. Here’s how you can upgrade them to their maximum potential.
Why is an upgrade worth it? Exotics are powerful weapons with unique talents and designs. They are therefore valuable not only for collectors but also in combat.
It can take a long time to acquire an exotic weapon. Elaborate tasks or prolonged grinding are necessary. It would be a shame to have to eventually put such a gun aside due to a low gear score.
What if you find an exotic weapon at a low level? You can upgrade Exotics and bring them to the highest gear score. Here’s how it works.

You can upgrade Exotics at the workbench
Here’s how you can upgrade your Exotics:
- Once you find an exotic weapon, you can purchase the appropriate blueprint from the vendor in the White House. This allows you to craft this Exotic at a higher level.
- Make sure to upgrade your workbench to the highest level first.
- Once you have gathered the necessary materials, you can craft your desired upgrade.
What do you need for an upgrade? For an upgrade of the “Schnatterente” to gear score 500, you need, for example:
- 36 Polycarbonate
- 26 Titanium
- 85 Closure Housing Components
- 1 Exotic Component
- “Schnatterente” at gear score 250+
How do you get exotic components? You need to dismantle an exotic item for that.

If you want to know how to get exotic weapons, check out our guides:
- The Schnatterente – this is how you get the exotic submachine gun
- This is how you get the exotic rifle Merciless
- Are you a fan of pistols? Then get the exotic Freedom Pistol
- If you’re a shotgun fan, the exotic “Sweet Dreams” might be for you
- Since the last update, you can get Pestilence, an exotic LMG
- Additionally, you can obtain the exotic parts for the Nemesis Sniper Rifle, but you should do that soon
What about exotic armor pieces? So far, there seem to be none in the game. Massive has mentioned and confirmed them several times before release.
Therefore, it is probably only a matter of time before they also find their way into the game.
