The Division 2 has just received a major update. This comes with a new season, more powerful weapons, and a special challenge for veterans of the shooter.
What kind of update is this? This went online today, on April 2, 2026, along with the new season “Rise Up”.
The list of new content and improvements to the loot shooter is quite lengthy. However, the two biggest innovations for players are a new rarity tier for gear and a game mode for those seeking a greater challenge.
New game mode for those seeking challenge
What’s inside the update? With Escalation, there is now a new way to replay completed missions. From your base, you can fast travel directly to these missions, but you should arrive well-prepared.
At the entrance to the mission, you choose one of ten levels, each one harder than the previous one and with special modifiers. Within a mission, there are no checkpoints, and you must complete it in one go. If your entire team dies or time runs out, you must start a new run.
If you want to play a mission at a higher level than the lowest, you must pay with Escalation Tokens. The higher the level, the higher the price, and the highest levels are said to challenge even players with the most optimized builds.
Escalation is designed as a new endgame challenge. So you should have already completed the main campaign with your agent and reached level 40 before you venture in.
Gear that will take your builds to the next level
What’s the deal with the new weapons? The new Escalation mode is currently also the only way to acquire Prototype Gear. This is a new rarity tier for items that is above the previous one. However, this will not render your old builds obsolete, according to the developers. Instead, you should still be able to push them further.
Prototype Gear comes with stronger attribute values and augmentations – special effects that work similarly to talents but are not tied to specific equipment types. Each Prototype item can therefore have any augmentation.
Additionally, you can upgrade many of your existing equipment items to Prototype Gear. Once improved, these items cannot be adapted anymore, so you should be satisfied with the base item before spending valuable resources on it.
What else is new? Besides these two major innovations, there are also some updates for the endgame activity Retaliation, Kill Squads offer chances for good loot, and some quality-of-life improvements have also made it into the update.
The Division 2 is currently experiencing a great comeback, despite the future of the game looking poor for a long time. Whether (or when) there will be a sequel has long been uncertain. However, it is now clear that The Division will continue for a long time: What’s the status of The Division 3? Leading Ubisoft developers break the silence, declaring: The team is in a “really great position”
