Actually, the Diablo 3 event was supposed to kick off on January 1, 2018, at midnight. However, it is not really active. The reason for this is communication problems.
To celebrate the anniversary of the Diablo series, the developers hold an annual anniversary event in Diablo 3. It is called “The Darkening of Tristram” and is intended to bring a touch of nostalgia to the community with a special old-school dungeon.
In the blog post, the Diablo team mentioned the start on January 1, but instead of fully launching, we are currently only in first gear and stuck there.

The anniversary event evokes memories of past Diablo adventures with a special dungeon. A pixel filter and special animations provide an extra dose of “retro” while you slice through the 16 levels full of monsters.
In the event announcement, the Diablo team writes that the event starts on January 1, 2018, and will be active until January 30.

However, one must read between the lines. Many players have already noticed that there is currently no portal to be found.
Currently, only a kind of “pre-event” is active. This means: While adventuring in adventure mode, you will find writings from cultists that give you hints about a portal. However, the portal is still not active.
Finding the Tristram Portal, when does it start?
Community manager Nevalistis responded to the community’s feedback in the Diablo forum. So far, only the pre-event is active – The portal to old Tristram will open on January 4.
Due to the misleading announcement, the community assumed that the portal would also be available at the start of the event. However, players will have to wait a bit longer for this. A specific time for when the portal opens has not yet been communicated. We will pass that along as soon as we have it.
