GTA 6 has been postponed again and fans are in disbelief. But one group is suffering even more from the delay: developers and publishers who did not plan for a postponement. For some of them, this could mean significant losses.
GTA 6 has officially been postponed for a second time. The release, which was originally scheduled for May 2026, is now postponed to November 2026, a delay of half a year. The postponement has completely surprised many.
On one hand are the players and fans who have long been hoping for the release of GTA 6. And the fans are showing their disappointment over the postponement of GTA 6, disbelief, but also sarcasm. However, another group is affected even more strongly: These are developers and publishers who had counted on GTA 6 being released in May 2026.
Postponement hits developers and publishers hard
Why is the postponement so problematic? A delay of GTA 6 particularly affects other development studios and publishers, because the release of such a major title has huge implications for the entire gaming industry and the scheduling of many other releases. Some had already been looking for an alternative release date to avoid the release of GTA 6:
- Many studios specifically plan their own releases around the release date of GTA 6 to avoid direct competition. Players have only limited financial resources to spend on games. And an expensive release like GTA 6 particularly strains the player’s budget.
- Most studios closely monitor the release calendar of industry giants and choose time slots in which no AAA releases are taking place to avoid losing attention and sales.
Some of the world’s largest publishers have already stated that Rockstar releases “pull a lot of money and especially time out of the market,” making it much harder for other games to be successful (via xda-developers.com).
The English-language magazine Forbes.com stated that some studios will ultimately have to work overtime to bring their games to market before the new GTA 6 slot, which would add additional strain on development teams and pose quality risks.
And according to Forbes, not only developers are affected by such a large postponement, but also other groups: hardware manufacturers, as players wait for GTA 6 to upgrade their systems and therefore invest no money in new hardware like gaming consoles.
The entire postponement comes at a real bad time for Rockstar Games: The developer is under massive criticism for poorly treating its employees. Rockstar is said to have fired dozens, leading to substantial criticism: Rockstar is under massive criticism for allegedly firing dozens of employees
