The survival game Empyrion – Galactic Survival on Steam is set to receive its first expansion titled “Dark Faction”. The developers are receiving support from Funcom, the creators of Conan Exiles.
What kind of game is this? Empyrion – Galactic Survival comes from Eleon Game Studios and was officially released on Steam in 2020, after being playable in Early Access for several years. It has garnered over 81% positive reviews on Steam. The game has also made it onto our list of the 25 best survival games of 2024 for PlayStation, PC, and Xbox.
With “Dark Faction,” the game is now set to receive its first expansion. The two companies, Eleon Game Studios and Funcom (Conan Exiles, The Longest Journey), have joined forces to expand the sandbox survival universe of Empyrion – Galactic Survival.
How is the partnership taking shape? According to the press release, the Switzerland-based development team has been working on Empyrion – Galactic Survival since 2015. Since then, “well over a million players have survived on many different planets and built their own, completely unique spaceship to explore the secrets of the galaxy.”
Funcom will handle financing and publishing services, allowing the team to pursue “even more ambitious additions.” According to Erling Ellingsen, Chief Marketing Officer at Funcom, the team is excited to help the developers expand the universe – “not just with Dark Faction, but with even bigger things in the future.”

The expansion showcases a darker side of the Empyrion galaxy
What is Empyrion – Galactic Survival about? In the open-world game, you build ships, space stations, and settlements on foreign planets to explore them and uncover their secrets. However, you have to deal with a hostile environment as well as various creatures and foes.
To survive, you need the right equipment and basic necessities such as food and oxygen. Various means of transport are available to you, ranging from motorcycles to tanks and spaceships – space battles included.
In the Dark Faction expansion, players will experience a completely new scenario and a dark side of the Empyrion galaxy – an indestructible organism threatens living beings. Dark Faction is, according to the press release, perfect for newcomers but also for Empyrion veterans and is expected to bring new mechanics, including improved melee gameplay, additional building materials, and new secrets.
When will the expansion be released? According to the press release, the entire team at Eleon Games is dedicated to the development. The expansion for Empyrion – Galactic Survival is scheduled for release on February 6, 2024, on Steam and the Epic Games Store.
