The Manga of One Piece is slowly approaching the finish line. Before the grand finale, there are still some things to reveal. But once Eiichiro Oda, the creator of the pirate epic, completes the story, he can focus on new things. Perhaps we can expect two spin-offs that he would like to write.
What spin-offs and characters are involved? In an interview from 2018, Oda revealed that he would like to highlight two characters from Monkey D. Luffy’s family. X-User sandman_AP summarizes with an image which two characters would be featured in the spin-offs:
Oda reveals that he would like to tell a story about Garp. The focus will primarily be on his relationships with various characters, about whom we would then automatically learn more. These include:
- Akainu
- Aokiji
- Smoker
- Hina
- Korby
- The Cipher Pol
- Gol D. Roger
The other character that Oda would like to spend more time on is Dragon. The focus should not only be on Luffy’s father but also on the entire Revolutionary Army. Oda describes such a spin-off as interesting and serious.
But it might take some time before Oda has enough time to focus on other stories. We won’t see the end of One Piece before 2026. Additionally, Oda is currently busy with several adaptations, including the live-action series of One Piece:

Don’t we see enough of Garp and Dragon? Garp is Luffy’s grandfather and was one of the most important figures in the Navy. He recently used one of the most powerful attacks in the anime, with which he even destroyed parts of the island.
Garp makes occasional appearances in the anime and manga. The 1st season of the live-action adaptation focused more on the Marine Vice Admiral. There he was one of Luffy’s “opponents”.
His father, Dragon, is even rarer to see. Although (or precisely because) he is the founder of the Revolutionary Army, he usually operates from the shadows. He was himself a Marine soldier in his past but turned away due to differing values.
It would be particularly interesting for One Piece fans to see what lies behind Monkey D. Dragon and what the Revolutionary Army looks like. But it could take several years before Oda finds enough time to implement the two spin-offs – if they even come at all.
Instead, the story of One Piece is being retold from the beginning. This time, however, not in over 1,000 episodes, but shorter: A new remake of One Piece for Netflix shows first images and reveals how long the series is supposed to run
