The best multiplayer shooters with MMO elements in 2017

Outlook: What else is coming our way in games like Destiny or The Division?

One can assume that when looking at the numbers of The Division, Destiny, or GTA V Online, this list of similar games to the three will become significantly longer in the coming years. The E3 could see a significant increase for the genre. But we are not there yet.

The most interesting shooters with MMO elements already announced for the year 2017 and beyond are:

Escape from Tarkov – MMO shooter focuses on hardcore and realism

Escape from Tarkov, EfT, is set to be a hardcore shooter that places much more emphasis on realism than other titles in the genre.

It is being developed by a Russian team in St. Petersburg and is currently in an extended alpha phase and is supposed to undergo beta phases in 2017 and launch later. Escape from Tarkov is being developed for PC. BattleState Games leave the option open to bring the shooter to PS4 and Xbox One as well.

Tarkov currently impresses primarily through great graphics and bold ideas. Players can get sick and must treat various problems such as wounds, concussions, or hypothermia correctly. Additionally, there can be issues with weapons if they are not treated properly. Realism is to be emphasized: One cannot simply mcgyver a MG from two boards, duct tape, and truck parts; the correct parts are required.

Escape from Tarkov describes itself as a story-driven MMO that combines first-person shooters and tactical shooters with RPG elements. Once the player has completed the various scenarios of the story, a “free mode” will open up for them.

Enlisted – Mass battles with MMO flair

Enlisted sees itself as a squad-based MMO shooter. Enlisted allows players to re-enact the most famous battles of World War II. The focus in Enlisted is on the realism of the game, just as in Tarkov.

Battles should not feel like “sporting competitions” but like real battles. It’s about achieving tactical objectives and executing plans. Fights can involve up to 120 or 150 players. That would again be “real” masses in an MMO shooter. Since Planetside 2, that’s hardly played a role.

Currently, Enlisted is still in an early stage of development. Although Enlisted has a strong publisher in Gaijin, but it is raising funds through a crowdfunding campaign to widen the scope of the game and include more scenarios.

The more money raised, the more famous battles of World War II should be in the game.
