The highlights of the week:
- The developers at Blizzard have announced a massive patch for the 20th anniversary of World of Warcraft. Look forward to the return of Blackrock Depths as a raid, a new opening event for the gates of Ahn’Qiraj, celebrations in front of the Caverns of Time, and much more.
- Season 1 of WoW: The War Within starts on September 11, 2024. Here you can find the complete schedule for the upcoming content phases of the expansion.
- Until September 10, 2024, you can secure one of two Collector’s Editions of WoW: The War Within through our giveaway.

Currently, a crossover event is running in Pearl Abyss’s MMORPG with the well-known anime or manga Berserk, where you’ll encounter skeleton knights and Zodd (via playblackdesert.com). According to myanimelist.net, Berserk is the most popular and best manga of all time. Black Desert is one of the most successful current MMORPGs.
What else happened? Since this week, you can unlock the new allied race of the Earthen and the associated traditional armor in WoW: The War Within. Some players are using an actually underwhelming racial bonus to level the Earthen. Alternatively, you can also simply send your parents on a gold and XP hunt – like this WoW player.
WoW – The War Within currently has several MeinMMO editors on the edge of their seats. Whether it’s worth starting with WoW in 2024, you can find out in this article. Here’s one of the trailers for the new expansion:
Former MMORPG by Richard Garriott isn’t making enough money, introduces two new subscription tiers
This happened with the major MMORPGs:
- At the launch of the new expansion for WoW, trading was at a standstill for a week – Blizzard has now explained the problem with the auction house.
- With the next update of WoW, Dracthyr will be able to choose from six new classes.
- Those who play a priest in WoW: The War Within can look forward to special comments from Xal’atath. The new antagonist works because she has been built up over several expansions. Many other villains have been burned out too quickly, says Game Director Ion Hazzikostas.
- On a hardcore server of WoW Classic, there was again a major server lag. Hundreds of characters died forever.
- Guild Wars 2 is getting a new PvP mode after a long time. Interested players can test the prototype of “Assault” on September 10, 2024 (from 9 PM) and provide feedback.
- On September 11, 2024, the new content update for Lost Ark will be released. Featured: the Behemoth raid, the latest elixir and transcendence updates from Korea, and more.
- The content update 43 of The Elder Scrolls Online has also been released for consoles this week – with Homestead and new content for the Endless Archive.
- With the new expansion Dawntrail, Final Fantasy XIV is receiving mixed feedback after ten years – The CEO doesn’t care. The good news: The community of YouTuber TheLazyPeon considers FFXIV to be the currently relevant MMORPG with the fairest payment model.
- The date for the next “Letter from the Producer Live” of Final Fantasy XIV has been set! Naoki Yoshida will discuss the upcoming content for the MMORPG on September 29, 2024, from the Tokyo Game Show (via finalfantasyxiv.com).
This happened with the smaller MMORPGs:
- In September and October, elections for the 19th “Council of Stellar” management will be taking place in EVE Online. More information can be found on eveonline.com.
- Since September 4, 2024, you can register for the PvP tournament “Silver City Cup” in Tarisland – all information can be found on tarisglobal.com.
- For Aion Classic, the update 2.8.5 titled “The Wall of Sorrow” has been released. You can find all the information on the new features at gameforge.com.
- The developers of Shroud of the Avatar have added two more optional subscription tiers, for $18 and $27 per month (via shroudoftheavatar.com). The reason: The current revenue from the free-to-play MMORPG is not sufficient to continue the game’s development in the medium term.
- Old School RuneScape celebrated strong player numbers this week, with 160,352 fans online at the same time in the MMORPG classic (via Reddit). Various websites report that this is a record. However, ten months ago, the game already had 185,123 concurrently active characters (via Reddit).
- On September 3, 2024, a new update for Fractured Online was released, optimizing the engine and bringing quality-of-life improvements. Additionally, you can play the MMORPG for free until September 9, 2024 (via fracturedmmo.com).
- On September 10, 2024, the MMORPG classic Tibia will stop supporting older Windows operating systems and will adjust the minimum and recommended system requirements (via tibia.com).
- MY.GAMES will no longer act as the publisher for Skyforge. Innova is expected to take on this role in the future. As part of this change, all players of the MMORPG will have to go through an account transfer. All the information can be found at sf.my.games.
- With Deepest World, a new MMORPG launched on Steam on September 2, 2024, allowing you to write the characters’ AI via JavaScript. However, the eleven reviews so far are not exactly enthusiastic.
This happened with MMORPGs in development:
- Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street spoke about the class design of “Ghost”. There are supposed to be many specialized classes that take on clear roles and possess strengths and weaknesses, similar to MOBAs like League of Legends.
- The developers of Corepunk have suspended pre-orders for the MMORPG until November. The reason: They have now received “enough pre-orders” to conduct large-scale testing of Alpha 4.
- In January 2024, the developers of Tavernlight Games successfully released their sandbox MMORPG RavenDawn for PC. Now it is clear that only seven months later, the successor is already entering early access.
- In the new developer update, the developers of Ashes of Creation showcased a raid instance for eight players and a raid challenge for 40 players.
- The developers of Throne and Liberty have launched a new video series on X to attract you to the upcoming MMORPG. Alternatively, you can also just read the five reasons from the MeinMMO editorial team why you should give Throne and Liberty a chance.
