For Nintendo’s popular gaming console, there is now a plethora of accessories that make gaming on the go much more comfortable. Here we present a selection of what we believe are the most useful gadgets for the Switch.
Battery Attachments
On the go, the Nintendo Switch often reaches its performance limits regarding battery life without an external power source, causing gameplay in demanding titles, such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, to end after about three hours.
To counteract this, power banks are of course the first option, but it can be inconvenient to have an external device dangling from the console during gameplay. A solution comes in the form of attachments with integrated batteries that can be directly mounted to the Switch.
Play longer on the go: The console’s own battery capacity of 4,310 mAh can be significantly expanded depending on the capacity of the battery attachment (usually between 6,500 and 10,000 mAh), effectively doubling or tripling gameplay time.
Carrying Cases and Accessory Sets
Safe Transport: Good carrying cases for transporting the console are undoubtedly among the most useful accessories when it comes to protecting the Switch from potential damage on the go.
There are now numerous customized models designed specifically for the console. Often, these also feature additional pockets for storing games, charging cables, or extra Joy-Cons.
Depending on the package, some sets also include other useful accessories like screen protectors, thumb grips, and more.
Game Transport Cases
If a carrying case for the console itself does not provide enough space for all the required games, purchasing a separate transport case may be worthwhile. After all, game cartridges also need to be protected from damage or dirt while on the go.
There are also various models of transport cases available in different sizes, often featuring hard-shell designs. Typically, they also offer space for SD cards, and they usually don’t cost a fortune.
Stick Attachments, Grips, and Stands
If you are dissatisfied with the ergonomics of the Nintendo Switch, there are various options to upgrade the console with accessories. If you want more grip or comfort when using the Joy-Con stick, you can consider various “Thumb Grips,” which are thumb attachments often sold in a variety of sets.
If the console does not lie optimally in your hand, there are also attachments with grips that can improve its feel. The grips have a plastic holder into which the Switch is simply inserted along with the attached Joy-Cons.
Some models even come with just a stand, allowing the Switch to be placed upright on the table. For those seeking a complete package, there are also combo solutions that include grips, stands, and battery packs.
Bluetooth Adapter for Audio and Controllers
The Nintendo Switch comes without Bluetooth support by default, but wireless headphones are becoming increasingly popular. Here, there is the option to retrofit the console using an adapter via the USB port.
Depending on the model, an additional USB port may also be offered as an expansion. However, prices can be quite high, especially if the dongle is intended to seamlessly attach to the device.
With the adapter from 8Bitdo, it’s also possible to use third-party controllers, such as from the PlayStation 4, while the console is in docking mode.
