Gege Akutami finished his manga on Jujutsu Kaisen about a year ago. While the anime is still in full swing, the mangaka is already dedicating himself to his next project. And it seems to be even more promising.
What kind of manga will this be? As reported by the X accounts Shonen Jump News and Manga Mogura RE, a new manga by Gege Akutami, the mangaka of Jujutsu Kaisen, is set to launch in the 41st issue of the “Weekly Shonen Jump” magazine.
The manga is titled Mimojuro and will include a story that is supposed to run shorter than other works. Gege Akutami will only be responsible for the story this time, with the drawings taken over by Yuji Iwasaki. You might know the artist from Cipher Academy.
What the manga will be about is still unknown. A possible connection to Jujutsu Kaisen has not yet been confirmed or denied. All previous information is pure speculation.
Mimojuro is ahead of Jujutsu Kaisen in one respect
What is better about Mimojuro? Since Akutami no longer has to create the story and drawings simultaneously, he can fully focus on the story of the new manga. The additional artist relieves Akutami. This is especially beneficial for him because his health condition was unfortunately rather critical recently.
This could suggest that the story might be even more gripping than in Jujutsu Kaisen.
Moreover, Akutami is known not to be the best artist, as many fans on Reddit have already noted. His drawings are not a disaster, but they are also not the best in the manga field. In the anime, it’s different because he is not responsible for the drawings there.
Iwasaki’s work on Cipher Academy looks much better. Therefore, Mimojuro might surpass its predecessor Jujutsu Kaisen, at least in terms of the drawings and the story.
Unfortunately, the manga is only planned as a short story. Therefore, it might be that a success as big as Jujutsu Kaisen is not in the cards. But the manga publisher Shueisha has high hopes for Mimojuro (see X). The manga will be featured on the cover of the Shueisha magazine upon its initial release.
