Toyotaro took over the manga of Dragon Ball Super after the death of Akira Toriyama. But for now, fans of Son-Goku and the others will have to be patient, as Toyotaro is working on his own manga.
What kind of manga is this? Toyotaro presented his new one-shot Lost Samurai over the weekend. This is a manga that is supposed to be completed in one volume. On the publisher’s website V-Jump, all 45 pages of the one-shot can already be seen, but only as a sketch.
Story-wise, a samurai must defend his village from dark demons. On page 29, there is also a drawing that clearly shows that the characters could stylistically derive from the Dragon Ball universe. However, the manga is said to have nothing in common with the adventures of Son-Goku and the Z-Team.
When the one-shot will be released is still unclear. Since the detailed drawings still have to be delivered, it is likely to take a few more months.
Toyotaro keeps Dragon Ball in sight
What does this mean for Dragon Ball? As Toyotaro first works on finishing his own manga, it may still take some time before he continues working on Dragon Ball Super. Since the death of Akira Toriyama, he has already published one volume of Dragon Ball Super. This particularly impressed with its cover.
Moreover, Toyotaro published a short story as the 104th chapter of the manga, which revolves around Trunks and Son-Goten’s passion for the Clean God. It was released on February 20, 2025, and is to this day the last chapter of Dragon Ball Super.
However, Toyotaro has a joyful message for all manga fans. At the Japan Expo 2025 in Paris, he seemed very confident in an exclusive interview with the press that he would be able to continue the manga (via X):
Toyotarō stated that it is not impossible to continue without Toriyama-sensei, as he (Toyotarō) wrote the story of Dragon Ball Super and then sent it to Toriyama. He decided whether to approve it. At other times, Toriyama sent him his stories for Toyotarō to review and make suggestions. Toriyama then validated or rejected them. Since part of the story comes from him, he believes it would be
not easy, but not impossibleto continue without Toriyama-sensei.
Unfortunately, his statement is no confirmation of when the manga will continue. But his confidence gives reason to hope that after the release of Last Samurai, he could devote himself to Dragon Ball Super.
Toyotaro himself once started as a fan of Dragon Ball Super and developed his own stories. Another fan of the Saiyans even drew his own Isekai.
