In The Lord of the Rings, the dragons were once bred by Melkor to serve as weapons in his dark wars. With their fire breath, they long spread fear and terror. This fire was so hot that it could even melt the Rings of Power, apart from the One Ring. Some species are said to have had magic, which allowed them to influence the will of the weaker beings.
Physically, dragons are extremely powerful. They are huge, strong, have nearly impenetrable scales and poisonous teeth. Moreover, some of them can fly. During the so-called War of Wrath, the dragons were almost completely destroyed. From “The Hobbit”, we mainly know Smaug. Whether there are any other dragons in Middle-earth after his death is, however, unknown.
