Place 3: It
- Released: 1990, 2017-2019
- Director: Tommy Lee Wallace, Andy Muschietti
In third place are two film productions that adapt the same novel while choosing somewhat different yet exciting approaches. On one hand, there’s the TV miniseries Stephen King’s It from 1990. This holds cult status among many fans, and rightly so. While it may not be outstanding from a purely cinematic perspective, and you can tell it has a relatively low budget, Tim Curry as Pennywise is fantastic, and there are some creative ideas in the two films.
Finally, in 2017 and 2019, the also well-done remakes followed, which relied much more on modern horror conventions like jump scares. The horror clown is here a lot meaner, and the small town of Derry with the Losers Club is portrayed more credibly than ever.
The story, which tells of the fears of the seven children and later adults, is timeless and works just as well in the 90s as it does today. For those who don’t feel like plowing through the 1,500 pages of the novel, there are two good adaptations here – one a bit dated, the other in line with current viewing habits. On MeinMMO, you can find a special feature on Pennywise.
