At first glance, Satou Matsuzaka appears unusually mature for her age in her behavior. She already works a part-time job and takes care of the much younger Shio, for whom she apparently also provides. Seeing Shio happy is Satou’s “Happy Sugar Life,” the pinnacle of feelings in life.
She seems to resolve conflicts in a factual, neutral, and efficient manner initially. She is popular with teachers, her classmates, and is considered by many to be the epitome of a young woman who, despite her age, is already well-grounded in life and shows significantly more reason than many of her same-aged peers.
What terrible thing has Satou done?
Breaking Satou’s actions down to a few points is nearly impossible. Essentially, everything she does in the anime is an expression of her twisted form of love. Not only is the target of her questionable love the far too young Shio – she also is a missing girl being sought by the police and her brother. Furthermore, Satou keeps Shio captive in her apartment and manipulates her psychologically, so that the young girl does not even realize she is being held.
When Shio’s brother tracks down his sister and Satou’s friend catches on to the incident, Satou resorts not only to cold-blooded murder but later sets the entire apartment building on fire to cover her tracks. When the escape with Shio fails, Satou convinces Shio to commit double suicide and jump off the roof of the high-rise.
