In WoW BC Classic you can learn to fly after reaching level 70. This feature was a highlight back then, as previously in World of Warcraft, you could only fly along fixed routes. MeinMMO presents five mounts that will make you look great in the air: The 5 coolest flying mounts in WoW Classic BC.
What kind of mounts are these? Here we present a number of mounts that allow you to fly in the new areas of the shattered world of Burning Crusade. We will showcase rare or hard-to-obtain mounts and explain how you can earn them.
Flying is a novelty in Burning Crusade, and you must have learned epic flying for all of these mounts. This will cost you a hefty 5,000 gold for the skill alone. This way, you’ll learn to ride mounts with 280% flying speed.
Some of the mounts we present here are even faster. With up to 310%, you can zip through the shattered world and farm that one ore or herb faster than the druid behind you.
How do I learn to fly? Once you reach level 70, you need to go to your faction’s flight trainer in Shadowmoon Valley:
- Ilsa Trubelbräu in Wildhammer Hold for the Alliance
- Olrokk in Shadowmoon for the Horde
There you can learn “Expert Riding” (i.e., normal flying) for 800 gold and “Epic Riding” (epic flying) for 5,000 gold. Druids can save the gold for normal flying due to their flight form. Once you have learned the epic flying skill, you can start farming the rare mounts.
1. Al’ar’s Ashes
The phoenix is the first boss in the Tempest Keep, one of the T5 raids of The Burning Crusade. With the ashes, you summon the burning bird as your personal mount. Al’ar’s Ashes is still among the rarest mounts in Retail WoW and most sought-after items.
This mount is one of two in Burning Crusade that allows for a speed of 310%.

How do I get the Ashes? Al’ar’s Ashes drop from Kael’thas Sunstrider, the final boss in the Tempest Keep. In Phase 1, i.e., the release of BC Classic, you cannot obtain the mount yet.
The keep only opens later, in Phase 2, and the drop chance is extremely low. So you need to be lucky for the mount to drop – and then the raid must also distribute the loot to you or you need luck in rolling.
In BC itself, your chance of getting the phoenix is extremely low. Kael’thas is among the hardest bosses in WoW and even though some guilds can breeze through all the content, very few players are likely to defeat Kael’thas without problems.
2. Netherwing Dragons
Nether dragons are a new type of enemy in the shattered world, primarily found in Shadowmoon Valley, Netherstorm, and Skettis. Unlike their relatives on Azeroth, these creatures have ethereal wings, no leathery wings, and a different head and body shape.
Netherwing Dragons come in six colors: azure, onyx, violet, cobalt, purple, and viridian green. Their flying speed is 280%.
How do I obtain the dragons? To ride a Netherwing dragon, you must endure a long series of tedious, repeatable quests. You start with a hated reputation at the lowest level and must work your way up to exalted reputation.
To do this, you need to start a quest line in Shadowmoon Valley with Mordenai. You can find him in the southeast at the Netherwing Fields. The quest “Kindness” begins the entire chain through which you will gain a neutral reputation.
After that, you can complete additional normal and daily quests, for which you must already be able to fly, or you look for Netherwing eggs. Each egg grants 250 reputation points. With exalted reputation, you can then choose a single dragon for free – so choose the color wisely.
Alternatively, you can make a name for yourself in PvP. For the “Gladiator” rank, meaning a spot in the top 0.5% of arena players, you will receive a Nether dragon in stylish armor. These special dragons have a flying speed of 310%.
3. Nether Rays
Nether Rays are used by the Sha’tari Skyguard to patrol. These creatures, resembling snakes with glued-on wings, have a peculiar appearance, but they are definitely among the unique mounts in the game.
How do I get the rays? Like with the Netherwing dragons, you need to grind reputation for the rays. This process is somewhat faster than with the Netherwings but still requires effort.
In the west of the Blade’s Edge Mountains at Ogri’la and in the southwest of the Terokkar Forest, right next to Skettis, you will find bases of the Skyguard. However, you must already be able to fly. The quest line starts in Shattrath with Yuula and the quest “Danger from Above.”
At the Skyguard, you can complete daily quests, kill Arakkoa in Skettis, and repeatedly turn in Shadow Dust to increase your reputation. After reaching exalted reputation, you can buy the rays for 200 gold.
4. Flying Machines
Flying machines are not mounts in the strictest sense, but mechanical constructs that somewhat resemble early attempts at helicopters. These vehicles, born from deep steampunk fantasy, are a masterpiece and the dream of every engineer.
How do I get the machines?? There are two versions: the normal flying machine with 60% flying speed and the turbo-powered flying machine with 280%. You learn the recipes from your faction’s engineering trainer in Shadowmoon Valley. However, the crafting is relatively expensive:
Flying Machine:
- 2 x Adamantite Frame
- 30 x Fel Iron Bar
- 8 x a handful of Fel Iron Bolts
- 8 x Starstem
- 5 x Adamantite Bar
- 4 x Elemental Zephyrium Charge
Turbo-Powered Flying Machine:
- 1 x Control for a flying machine (the first mount)
- 8 x Khorium Power Core
- 8 x Fel Steel Stabilizer
- 1 x Hula Doll
Theoretically, you could buy all the individual parts and have the mounts directly at hand, but the costs are likely to be enormous. By comparison, you probably pay the most for the engineering recipes of all mounts – depending on the server.
5. Cenarion War Hippogryph
The war hippogryph of the Cenarion Expedition looks almost identical to the flying mounts of the Night Elves from Azeroth. If you have ever flown with a Night Elf flight master, you likely know how these creatures look. The advantage: of all the mounts presented here, you will probably get the hippogryph the easiest.

How do I get the hippogryph? To ride this mixture of deer and eagle, you need an exalted reputation with the Cenarion Expedition. Most of you will probably already be respectful or at least friendly here.
Only the quests in Zangarmarsh and the dungeons of the Coilfang Reservoir give you a decent amount of reputation for the faction. Later, you need to visit the Steam Vault to raise your reputation to exalted.
The enemies in the Steam Vault (heroic or normal) already grant reputation and drop Coilfang weapons. You can then repeatedly turn these in at the Expedition’s camp in the east of Zangarmarsh. You will then get the hippogryph for 1,700 gold from the quartermaster.
Before you can start collecting all the mounts, you first need to get some gold – and first reach level 70. That alone can take a while. We help you with our guide through the shattered world and the old zones in case you lost touch:
