Color Codes in the Battle for Dazar’Alor
High-tech Mekkadrill was fought in the expansion Battle for Azeroth. It was – as you would expect from a gnome – a pretty technical fight with all sorts of explosions and little robots.
A special mechanic was the defusing of bombs. During the fight, several robots appeared, which exploded after a while. Some characters were shrunk so they could climb into the robots and defuse them from the inside.
The problem: The defusing requires input of a color code. However, this code is displayed above the robots, so the characters inside the robots cannot see it.
This required characters outside to read out the correct color order so that the characters inside the robots could input the code correctly.
What sounds simple becomes quite chaotic when 3 robots need to be defused at the same time and several people are speaking out of turn.
Although the fight was creative and the mechanic unique, there was also a lot of criticism – because Blizzard overlooked a few points. On the one hand, there are many people who feel uncomfortable speaking in voice chat. This made the fight difficult.
Even worse, however, were the players who suffered from various forms of color blindness. If they were chosen to read out the correct color codes, the task was virtually impossible.
This is likely the reason why Blizzard has not used this mechanic a second time – although it was interesting and exciting in theory, it excluded a part of the community and thus made the fight a pure gamble.
