Finding the Traitor in the Mausoleum of the First
Although Shadowlands as a whole is seen more as a bad expansion, there were many cool ideas especially in the raids of this addon. One of them is the hunt for the traitors in the fight against the Lords of Terror.
The “Traitor” mechanic requires players in the raid to communicate with each other. Because randomly, some characters are declared “traitors”. During a specific combat phase, these traitors have a shadowy Lord of Terror floating behind them, which can only be seen by certain characters.
At the same time, the “traitors” have also been manipulated and can see these Lords of Terror at some other characters – although they are just illusions.
The task of the raid is now to find out who among the characters are the “real” traitors and defeat them before the time limit runs out.
The only way to identify a “real traitor” is to expose them through at least 3 characters. Only if 3 players see a Lord of Terror together on another person, can you be sure that this is indeed a traitor.
This mechanic often led to wild and heated discussions in raids. A single mistake could end the raid, and “silence” was not an option – if you could see a Lord of Terror, you had to immediately communicate that.
Later, this mechanic was drastically simplified by an addon, so that one only had to press a button in the interface to “agree” to see someone as a traitor. But if you didn’t use this addon, the fight was extremely entertaining.
