Rank 1: Death Knight
By a large margin, the campaign of the Death Knights in Legion is in first place. No other campaign has captured the “Class Fantasy” better. Death Knights are not shining heroes or nice adventurers gathering baking ingredients for little Timmy in the woods of Elwynn. They are undead elite soldiers of the Lich King, freed from most of their mortal feelings and ruthless.
This is reflected in the campaign repeatedly, as you frequently have the option to simply attack and kill supposedly friendly NPCs if they stand in your way. You are not deterred from nearly wiping out an entire dragon swarm or storming the Paladin Order Hall to abduct a dead Paladin to force him into undeath.
While the campaign mainly centers around the formation of the 4 Horsemen, these personalities are strong lore characters and fit perfectly with the grim approach of the Death Knights.
The only criticism that the campaign must endure is the fact that it deals relatively little with the threat of the Legion. Instead, the focus is on the 4 Horsemen, as well as the Lich King. The whole thing has a somewhat sinister touch of “The world is sinking into chaos through the Legion, and we can exploit this to strengthen our own position.”
If you haven’t played this campaign yet, there is a very clear recommendation. You would regret not experiencing this dark story later.
Of course, the other Order Hall campaigns are also worth a look and provide more context for all the events in Legion or try to fulfill the class fantasy. However, especially the campaigns of Priests or Monks are often criticized for having relatively little happening or that you serve more as a “side character” of other classes or lore characters. At least for the story of the individual artifact weapons – as well as Xal’atath with the Priests – a look is still worthwhile.
