The 2nd season of the series Wednesday has already been released halfway, with the last episodes following in a few days. But a dark picture is already emerging, especially in comparison to the record-breaking first season.
How is Season 2 going? Unlike the first season, the people responsible at Netflix decided to release the sequel to Wednesday in two blocks. The first one was released on August 6, 2025, and the second will celebrate its release on September 3.
Overall, Season 2 has high expectations to meet: Season 1 is still the most successful English-language series on Netflix and has reached an impressive 252 million views according to a ranking on netflix.com.
In overall comparison, including non-English productions, Wednesday ranks high at number 2. The first place goes to the first season of Squid Game with 265 million views.
Comparing how well the first four episodes of Wednesday Season 2 have performed so far, Netflix faces a bitter picture. In the third week after release, they achieved “only” around 92 million views according to What’s on Netflix. By comparison, Season 1 reached 150 million in just three weeks.
The numbers also show that interest declined in the first three weeks: At the end of Week 2, there were 79 million views, and a week later 92 million. Within seven days, the series therefore gathered only about 13 million views.

Where does the missing interest come from?
These could be the reasons: The first season was a resounding success for Netflix, making significant waves. The series was also present far beyond the streaming platform, partly due to viral clips.
Notably, a dance scene became famous where lead actress Jenna Ortega dances to the tune of “Goo Goo Muck” by the band The Cramps. The scene spread through social media like TikTok and was recreated, sometimes altered. This caused a significant boost in popularity for the series.
For Season 2, there is no sign of a comparable phenomenon yet. However, perhaps Episodes 5–8 hold potential for viral hits.
Another point could be the timing of the release. Season 1 premiered on November 23, 2022, right in the middle of the gloomy fall. The season fit well with the series and created the right mood outside living room windows. In early August, when Season 2 started, it was summer, and perhaps the Halloween vibe was simply not in the air.
The decision to release Season 2 in two blocks could also be a reason – but also a glimmer of hope for Netflix. Many viewers love to watch a series in one go without taking a break.
It may well be that some were put off by the split release and are waiting until all episodes are available. The numbers could significantly improve when Episodes 5–8 finally see the light of day.
