Half Life 3 is like a myth when it comes to the gaming community. Fans have long been waiting for a sequel to the title on Steam: now for over 21 years. A former developer in retirement now reports whether he would help Valve with their sequel, but his opinion on it is already clear.
Which developer are we talking about? This is Marc Laidlaw. He was the lead writer at Valve and one of the leading developers behind the Half-Life games. The story of Gordon Freeman and the disaster at the secret facility at Black Mesa was crafted by his hands.
However, he left Valve in 2016 and dedicated himself to writing various stories. In a new interview with IGN, the veteran now talks about a possible return to Valve, should the studio need his help for Half Life 3. However, his opinion is already set.
“The Half-Life part of my life is definitely behind me”
What did Marc Laidlaw report in the interview? IGN asked the veteran if he would agree to help Valve if they needed his assistance for the development of Half Life 3. According to him, he would decline. He felt even back then, when he was still on the team, that he would hinder the development because he had laid the groundwork.
The team didn’t need anyone saying, “Well, the G-Man wouldn’t have done that in my time.” For him, it was important to allow new ideas, and that would not have been possible with him.
He added: “Besides, I am one of the older ones, maybe not the oldest, but it’s so much work. I don’t think I could do that anymore. Although I take care of my own things, they don’t fit with others. And yes, I’m pretty much done. Maybe not entirely with games, but the Half-Life part of my life is definitely behind me.”
Nevertheless, the veteran is not completely out of the gaming industry. If Hideo Kojima contacted him and needed help polishing Death Stranding, he would be on board immediately.
