Place 9: Fredegar Bolger
Fredegar Bolger was the typical Hobbit. He was often affectionately called “Fatty” because he was a bit plump and rather comfortable. When Frodo and his companions set out on their great adventure, Fredegar chose to stay behind alone and keep an eye on Frodo’s house. In doing so, he even wore Frodo’s clothes to hide his departure from curious eyes.
When a Nazgûl approached the house shortly after, Fredegar fled in fear. Considering this dark and powerful creature, one can hardly blame him.
He showed more courage in the fight against Lotho Sackville-Baggins. This character subjugated the Shire after Frodo’s departure. Fredegar led a rebellious group that fought against this new rule. In their hideout, the rebels were ultimately smoked out and captured. Fredegar lost so much weight during this ordeal that he was hardly recognizable later.
Facing a majority of enemies without any combat experience takes a lot of courage. Therefore, he ranks ninth among the strongest Hobbits, even though he receives little mention in the film.
