The so-called higher vampires are by far the most powerful subspecies of vampires. Unlike their relatives, they are not sensitive to sunlight. Although they do feel a thirst for blood, they are not dependent on it.
Generally, higher vampires are more human than bat. They are very intelligent and often live in cities, where they blend in with people. Even with the help of a witcher medallion, they cannot be distinguished from humans at first glance.
In combat, higher vampires are extremely deadly opponents, even for witchers. They are extremely fast, strong, can become invisible, control other creatures, or transform themselves into a giant bat. Killing them permanently is nearly impossible. Even if you chop them into several pieces, they can heal through their enormous regenerative powers.
Even Geralt likely would not have been able to face the higher vampire Dettlaff without the help of Regis, another higher vampire.
