What happens in the episode? Reinhard von Lohengramm confesses to Hildegard von Mariendorf that the memory of Siegfried Kircheis has prompted him to engage in peace talks. Yang Wen-li realizes that another war without Edwin Fischer would be hopeless. He accepts the negotiations. However, on the way to the talks, his ship is attacked by terrorists. Yang Wen-li and his companions die.
Why is it rated so highly? This place also features an episode from Legend of the Galactic Heroes. The death of Yang Wen-li as the hope of humanity deeply affected many viewers. He did not die in a great battle, but through a vicious ambush. That a protagonist dies in this way was unpredictable for many – especially in the penultimate season.

What happens in the episode? Viking Askeladd prevents King Sweyn from invading Wales. The king offers him the choice between Wales and Sweyn’s son Canute. The king does not care much for his son. Askeladd responds to the offer by beheading Sweyn. However, Canute kills him. In Askeladd’s final moments, he gets to speak once more with protagonist Thorfinn, who cannot believe that Askeladd will die in this way.
Why is it rated so highly? As with many other episodes in this ranking, viewers appreciate the emotional finale. Askeladd dies at the hands of the person he saved, and Thorfinn loses the meaning of his life. Vinland Saga breaks with a clichéd ending here and brings many fans to tears.
