The European TERA under Gameforge has received a new partner system. Players can now secure better “pets” that have really good abilities.
In the MMORPG TERA (PC) in Europe, patch 81 is now live, which is called “Illusions of Damnation”.
In addition to new dungeons and the ability to convert old costumes into badges for new costumes, there is a revamp of the companion system. From now on, you can get “partners” who have even stronger abilities.
When can you get partners? You can unlock your first partner starting at level 66. For this, simply accept the corresponding quest at the Heights Watch, which unlocks the partner system at the end. The quest also rewards you with the first partner.
What can partners do? Partners have their own levels and two different abilities: one passive and one active ability. The strength and duration of these abilities depend on the level of the partner and their bond with the player. A few examples of the abilities would be:
- 10%/15%/20% increased critical success chance when crafting for 5 minutes.
- 5%/10%/15% additional experience points when defeating monsters for 30 seconds.
- 500/750/1000 mana regeneration per second for 3 seconds when mana points are low.
These and other abilities make partners more than just toys, as they can provide real gameplay advantages.
Sacrificing partners to level up partners: The system is a bit cruel as well. If you want to level up your partners, you have to “feed” them with other partners.
You use an unappreciated partner as material and thus grant your desired partner experience points. This way, the partner levels up, their bond with you increases, and so does the effect and duration of their abilities.
If desired, you can even teach your partners abilities from companions. For example, a partner can learn to automatically use a healing or mana potion for the character when their health points (or mana points) fall below a certain value. This value can be individually set for both cases.
Where can you see the partner system in action? Here in the stream, Gameforge employees present the new system:

Sacrificing companions to breed partners: It is also possible to level up the “old” companions and later fuse them to create a new partner with some luck. However, there is no guarantee of success, and the attempt can fail. So you should consider carefully whether you want to fuse two companions and take the risk.
In summary, partners are a significantly stronger and more versatile version of the previous companions. Anyone who enjoys collecting and leveling their “pets” will likely have fun with the new system.
