Who won the tournament? The winner of the first TFT Invitational was Jang “Keane” Lae-young. The 26-year-old Korean actively played as a mid-laner for the LoL team FlyQuest in North America until November 2018.
He now belongs to the TFT team of SoloMid and played at a high level for a long time during the first season, finishing “only” with Diamond 1.
At the Invitational, however, he showcased his strength, achieving first place three times in a row in the finals. We present to you the champion combos that helped Keane succeed.
Combo 1 – Shadow, Mystic, Summoner
What is this combo? In the first four matches of the finals, Keane did not achieve a victory. In matches 3 and 4, he tried out several combos but returned to an old strategy in match 5.
In the preliminary round, he already used almost all summoner and shadow champions. This was also the case in match 5. He ended up facing Rakin in a 1v1, who was using a combo of 6 light champions. In the fight of light vs. shadow, shadow triumphed impressively.
These champions were used:
- Sion – Shadow/Berserker
- Master Yi – Shadow/Blade Master/Mystic
- Malzahar – Shadow/Summoner
- Lux – Avatar/Shadow x2
- Zed – Blitz/Summoner/Assassin
- Kah’Zix – Desert/Assassin
- Yorick – Lich/Summoner

- Sion – Shadow/Berserker
- Master Yi – Shadow/Blade Master/Mystic
- Malzahar – Shadow/Summoner
- Yorick – Lich/Summoner
- Azir – Desert/Summoner
- Qiyana – Ocean/Assassin
- Nami – Ocean/Mystic
- Aatrox – Light/Blade Master
- Kindred – Inferno/Shadow/Archer
Combo 2 – Blitz, Summoner, Shadow, Guardian
What is this combo? Keane won match 6 with a slightly different build. He relied on 4 Blitz champions, and only marginally on summoner and shadow.
With these champs and an interesting combination of items, Keane secured victory in Teamfight Tactics Set 2.
These champions were used:
- Lux – Avatar/Blitz x2
- Zed – Blitz/Assassin/Summoner
- Ornn – Blitz/Guardian
- Taric – Crystal/Guardian

Combo 3 – Blitz, Avatar, Summoner, Assassin, Desert, Shadow, Cloud

His item build with 3x Zeke’s Herald on Azir was employed again.
These champions were used:
- Lux – Avatar/Blitz x2

- 2x Desert
- 2x Shadow
These items were used:
- Azir – 3x Zeke’s Herald
- Zed – Zephyr
- Yorick – Warden’s Armor
- Lux – Guinsoo’s Rageblade
- Kha’Zix – Seraph’s Embrace, Rapid Firecannon
- Qiyana – Runaan’s Hurricane, Swordbreaker
Keane relies heavily on Shadow and Summoner
What stands out in the combos? In his builds, Keane primarily relies on shadow and summoner. Malzahar and Yorick are present on the board in 5 of his 6 victories at the Invitational. He also played at least 2 shadow creatures in 5 of 6 wins.
He is not alone in this. Disguised Toast, Becca, and Holythoth also utilized shadow creatures in their combos to win. The final of the Invitational even began with 4x shadow vs. 4x shadow.

What is the current state of the meta? Keane has since published a tier list for the second set. In it, he places many champions he himself played in the tournament in the S-Tier.
In the S-Tier are:
- Kindred
- Kha’Zix
- Qiyana
- Master Yi
- Lux
- Sion
- Malzahar
- Diana
Almost all of the champions he used in victories during the tournament are placed in S or A-Tier.
