Paradox Interactive has burned millions again. It’s like a curse: The Swedes rake in money when they release their games for history nerds like Europa Universalis or Crusader Kings on Steam, but as soon as they want to venture into other genres, it crashes and they burn millions: The latest victim is a studio in California that was supposed to make them a Sims clone. After five years, “Life by You” is dying, and so is the studio.
Who is Paradox Interactive?
Paradox Interactive was founded in 1995, and the company’s roots lie in board games and miniatures for strategy games. Even the first game, “Svea Rike,” showcased the studio’s direction: a mix of strategy and history.
Over 30 years, the studio has built a unique reputation with increasingly sophisticated history simulations among PC gamers. They have four major franchises, all now in their third or fourth incarnation:
- Crusader Kings depicts the Middle Ages: It starts with the Viking invasion of England and ends many centuries later as the age of knights slowly fades.
- Then Europa Universalis takes over, covering roughly the time from the discovery of America to the French Revolution.
- With Victoria, players simulate the beginning of industrialization as the importance of the economy grows.
- With Hearts of Iron, it’s all about world war.
The four game series have been developed for decades, and in addition, Paradox offers exciting standalone games like Stellaris or Imperator: Rome.
Crusader Kings 3 is the favorite game of MeinMMO author Schuhmann:
Paradox is killing yet another studio
What is the problem? For many years, Paradox has wanted to act as a publisher and enter other areas, but they now leave a trail of destruction behind.
The new horror game is now the Sims rival “Life by You”, which they developed for five years in California at great expense, only to now cancel both the game and the studio “Tectonic”.
This makes the Swedes terribly sorry (via paradox).
Millions are burning
What are the other examples? The story is repeating itself here. Just in October 2023, Paradox produced the massive flop “Lamplighter’s League” and then killed the studio. 28 million euros are said to have disappeared here.
With Star Trek Infinite, a poor Stellaris clone, they also botched it. In April 2024, the lights went out here.
Also City Skylines II, which Paradox publishes, is turning into a nightmare for the Swedes on Steam.
Paradox seems to have no lucky hand with projects from other studios in recent years. The Swedes are taking high risks here, sometimes it pays off. This way, we have unique strategy games that otherwise no one might have dared to tackle: I am obsessed with a new game on Steam: I have already invested 40 hours in 4 days
