The survival game Nightingale had a rough start. Over the months, it lost more and more players and could only convince with its content to a limited extent. Now the developers have revamped everything – successfully, it seems. Nightingale is in a much better position and even attracts thousands of players.
This is how Nightingale has fared so far:
- The new survival game launched on February 20 for PC on Epic and Steam. The reviews back then were quite mixed.
- Just one month later, player numbers on Steam had dropped from 47,000 at launch to half, until only a few hundred were left by August (via steamcharts). The reviews hovered around 63%.
- The developers are now taking a different approach and have a plan to save Nightingale – apparently successfully. The revisions are now in and the game is doing significantly better.
What’s new: With “Realms Rebuilt,” the entire player experience of Nightingale has been refreshed. Instead of a rocky tutorial and loosely linked quests, players now receive a continuous story with a real campaign.
The maps, or “Realms,” through which players are guided here are no longer random but designed for the campaign. Procedurally generated realms are now called “Untamed Realms” and can be explored independently of the campaign. Along with the new campaign, Nightingale now features:
- revised dungeons and 6 new bosses
- new weapons (short and long bows) as well as new spells (fireball and fish rocket – yes, really!)
- more building options, now with a new look
- various improvements to gameplay, UI, and combat
It is now possible to properly equip and use consumable items, and the constant switching of weapons and tools is supposed to work more smoothly. You can find the complete patch notes on the official website (via playnightingale.com).
Nightingale has over 6,000 more players, receives better reviews
The free update “Realms Rebuilt” apparently attracts a lot of players. On Steam alone, Nightingale has increased from 530 to 6,539 peak players. That’s an increase of over 500%. Additionally, over 1,200 players are playing on average.
The reviews for the recent ratings have climbed to 73% and are now classified as “mostly positive” (via Steam). Users praise the improvements of “Realms Rebuilt” in their reviews:
Before Realms Rebuilt, [Nightingale] was like any other sandbox survival/open-world survival game. […] After Realms Rebuilt – a breath of fresh air. I am presented with a semi-linear storyline, and if I happen to get bored, I can open my own portal. It’s like a completely different game and in my opinion, much better.

Other players agree and say: Nightingale is now “10,000% better,” especially the new campaign is amazing. The negative voices criticize the still missing content. Nightingale feels a bit empty, and it’s better to wait for version 1.0.
Whether Nightingale can retain these players in the long term remains to be seen. At least the survival game still has more than 5,000 players over a week later. So far, Nightingale also still counts among our best survival games. More recommendations for the genre can be found here: The 28 best survival games 2024 for PS5, Steam, and Xbox
