Who is behind Vecna? Originally, Vecna, played by Jamie Campbell Bower, was the boy Henry Creel. His childhood and teenage years are not entirely clear, as different versions are told within the series. As a child, Henry had problems and was described as sensitive
by his own father. He claimed that teachers and doctors said he was broken

In a cave, young Henry finds stolen research equipment and ends up in Dimension X (which is different from the Upside Down). There, he encounters an unknown entity, but he manages to come back. Henry has changed and developed strange blood. It can be assumed that this is where he gets his abilities. However, the versions of the story differ within the series, especially concerning his age when he found Dimension X.
After an incident, the family moved away, but Henry began to terrorize them with visions and his powers. His mother already suspected that it could be him, but when she contacted a doctor, Henry killed her. He also killed his sister and his father, who can be seen in Episode 4 of Season 4, was blamed for the murders.
Henry’s time as an experiment
How did Henry become the monster Vecna? Dr. Brenner took notice of the boy and told his father that he had died after the death of his mother and sister. However, Henry was taken to the lab in Hawkins and became Subject 001. Several experiments were conducted, but Brenner did not trust Henry.
This is why Brenner wanted to develop other super soldiers with powers for the Cold War. This led to Eleven’s mother participating in an experiment. It is said that she also received Henry’s blood.
In 1979, he used Eleven to remove the chip that suppressed his powers. After that, he attempted to escape from the lab. In the process, he killed several other children and staff members. When he asks Eleven if she wants to follow him, a fight begins between the two.
Eleven manages, with her powers, to nearly finish Henry off, but she opens a portal into which Henry is sucked. You see him flying in, gradually transforming into something monstrous due to red lightning. After a quick cut, you see how he became the Vecna known as a villain.
Vecna hates humans
What does Vecna want to achieve? During his childhood (or after his journey into Dimension X), Henry developed a certain hatred for humans. He clearly expresses this in Episode 7 of Season 4:
They [he’s talking about Black Widows] are the gods of our world. The most important of all predators. They incapacitate the weak and feed on them, bringing balance and order to an unstable ecosystem. But the human world has disturbed that harmony. You know, humans are a unique species of pests. They reproduce and poison our world.
It can be assumed that he is talking about the monsters from the other dimension – like the Mind Flayer. Humans began to disturb their order and balance with experiments. In Season 4, it becomes clear that he wants to open many portals to create gates between the Upside Down and Hawkins.
At the end of Season 4, it also seems that he has made good progress, as not only is the town destroyed, but you see several cracks, red lightning, and the ash-like dust known from the Upside Down. It does not seem to harmonize well with the real world, as you can see plants dying.
As you learn in the first 5 minutes of the latest season, Vecna seems to have been pulling the strings since Season 1. To execute his plan, Will seems to be relevant as well. In the official trailer for Season 5, Vecna shows great interest in Will and even says: William, you will help me. One last time
For the heroes, it is clear for Season 5: They must kill Vecna to end everything.
Vecna becomes increasingly powerful
How powerful is Vecna? After his encounter in Dimension X, Henry has gained psychokinetic abilities similar to Eleven. Thanks to his telepathy, he can delve into the thoughts of his victims. He uses this to drive his victims insane and torment them with fears and traumas.
He himself explains in Episode 7 of Season 4 that he becomes stronger with each victim, as he absorbs them. Like Eleven, he also has the ability to open portals to other dimensions.
Since he allied himself with the Upside Down (and looks like a monster), he has become even more powerful. Through his connection with the Mind Flayer, he can control multiple beings. Among them are the Demogorgons, the flying monsters in the Upside Down, and the many tentacles that can be seen everywhere.
Furthermore, it seems that Vecna is not easy to kill. When the heroes burn Vecna in Episode 9 of Season 4 and shoot him out of the window with a weapon, Will later finds out that Vecna is still alive.
Despite his powers, Vecna also has weaknesses. Music seems to weaken his abilities in a person’s mind, and people with strong willpower can counter his abilities.
