A popular superhero series has just received a second season. It continues the story and is receiving very good ratings. Moreover, it plays an important role for the comic giant DC.
Which series is it? Peacemaker is a series from DC Comics. The first season premiered in January 2022 and was especially a treat for fans of Guardians of the Galaxy – no wonder, the films are from the same director, James Gunn.
In the lead role is John Cena as the titular Peacemaker. He is a gun-toting mercenary who literally goes over corpses to maintain peace. The second season takes place shortly after the events of the new Superman and brings back absurd humor and characters, including a strange eagle.
The first season already received very good ratings and achieved a score of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. That is already quite good, but is currently being surpassed by the second season.
The perfect superhero series?
How is the second season received? The continuation premiered on August 21, 2025, for the new season. Again, there will be eight episodes released weekly. The finale, which like two additional episodes is directed by James Gunn himself, airs on October 9. In this country, the series can be seen on the subscription service RTL+.
The ratings on Rotten Tomatoes exceed those of the first season by a few percentage points. The continuation brings in a tremendous 99%. Thus, the series also surpasses other favorites like the superhero series The Boys, whose third season has a score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Critics praise Peacemaker especially for its humor, but emphasize how emotional the series remains at the same time. John Cena’s portrayal also receives praise. Although not everything is perfect overall, the new season still convinces. Sam Adams from Slate Magazine summarizes:
“As in the first season, the second season of Peacemaker runs the risk of having too few jokes spread over too many hours – even though sometimes it is that very idea of a joke lasting too long that is the joke. But it’s also strangely fascinating.”

Apart from its quality, the series is also an important building block in the new DC universe.
What role does the series play? Under the supervision of James Gunn, the new DC universe was launched in 2024, now simply called the “DC Universe.” It is the counterpart to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In the past, DC tried to match the competitor with their old DC Extended Universe but always lagged behind. The second season of Peacemaker is now officially part of the first chapter of the DC Universe, “Gods and Monsters.”
Alongside the new Superman film, which also comes from James Gunn, DC could thus create a solid foundation for future productions. The positive reception of the series greatly helps in this endeavor. Numerous other films and series are to follow, including Supergirl, Clayface, or a new Wonder Woman movie.
