Almost everyone uses Steam, Epic, or another software. But which platform is the best? MeinMMO presents a ranking of the most important platforms.
How did our ranking come about? For our ranking, we gathered all significant platforms and then voted internally within the editorial team on the different platforms. Our ranking is derived from this data and is therefore reliable.
We deliberately did not include pure key seller shops, such as Gamesplanet or Humble Bundle, in the list, as it would have overwhelmed the selection. Although Humble Bundle also offers DRM-free options, it does not provide a dedicated client or other features.
8th Place: Ubisoft Connect (formerly: Uplay)
Company: Ubisoft | Security: 2FA with email or phone number | Download link
Strengths: Ubisoft Connect is the platform of the French company Ubisoft. It distributes all its games through this software. In addition to a shop and a library, achievements and cloud saves are integrated for certain games. Games can be installed and updated relatively easily through it.
Additionally, Ubisoft+ offers a paid subscription that allows you to play all Ubisoft games at no extra cost.
There is also a loyalty system: For certain achievements or purchases, you receive so-called Ubisoft Connect units (formerly: Uplay units), which you can use for a discount coupon in the in-house shop. You can redeem 100 points for a 10% discount.
Weaknesses: Ubisoft requires Ubisoft Connect for all its games. This regularly leads to chaotic conditions and compatibility issues with Steam. There are also sometimes severe problems with the authentication of game licenses, which are not recognized correctly at times.
Ubisoft Connect also relies on aggressive advertising for its own products after starting the client and after finishing games. Some acquaintances report that some payment options only partially or not at all work through Ubisoft Connect.
Ubisoft has undermined its own loyalty system by introducing an expiration date for Uplay units. Saving up for a discount coupon over the years is only partially possible now.
On reddit, some complain that you always had to grant admin rights multiple times when starting Ubisoft Connect. We could confirm the problem in the editorial team.
Ubisoft Connect does not offer community features like reviews, guides, or discussions. Additionally, Ubisoft shut down the official forums on April 25, 2023, and now only offers a Discord group.
7th Place: EA App (formerly: Origin)
Company: Electronic Arts | Security: 2FA with email | Download link
Strengths: The EA App is the official software from Electronic Arts. In the EA App, you can buy games; otherwise, it is mandatory for all EA games, regardless of which platform you buy on.
The EA App offers a shop, a library, and internal achievements. Basic profile features (like comparing with friends) are also included.
EA offers two paid subscription models for games, EA Play and EA Play Pro, which allow you to play many EA games at no extra cost.
Weaknesses: The EA App struggles with compatibility issues with other platforms like Steam. Players report faulty licenses or that their game does not start through Steam because the EA App is not running smoothly.
If you use Game Pass and Steam, multiple versions of the EA App are installed simultaneously instead of using the same installation.
On the next page, you will find places 6 to 3, which we want to present to you in detail.
