Valve has introduced the new Steam Deck OLED. Many now want to know if they can upgrade their old model or trade it in for a new model. We will explain how things currently stand.
Valve has introduced its new Steam Deck with OLED display. In just a few days, you will be able to order the new edition. Many users now want to know if there will be an upgrade or even a trade-in option.
What is trade-in anyway? Trade-in means that a manufacturer takes back an old device and offers you a discount on the successor or another device in return. Many mobile phone manufacturers do this to artificially reduce the second-hand market.
The differences between Steam Deck and the new OLED model are broken down for you in the following article:
Steam Deck OLED: Upgrade and Trade-In?
Will there be a trade-in for the Steam Deck? No, this is not currently planned according to Valve. Therefore, those who purchased a Steam Deck in recent weeks and months cannot exchange their current model for the OLED version. There is also no indication that Valve will offer this option later.
If you purchased your Steam Deck just a few weeks or months ago, then it’s just an unfortunate coincidence. If you ordered your model just a few days ago, you can still cancel your order and re-order on November 16.
Will there be an upgrade? No, there will be no upgrade kit or anything similar at this time. You can manually swap the NMVe-SSD on both the old and new models. However, Valve does not offer a specific kit or upgrade service for this. We also consider a replaceable OLED display unlikely and it probably wouldn’t be worth it for Valve.
