A game actively limits the framerate and calls it ‘Multiplayer Fairness.’ However, many gamers find this anything but funny. After all, they paid a lot of money for their hardware.
Now, some users report on reddit that the new racing game Forza Motorsport 2023 on Steam actively limits the framerate. In the game, there is a note in online mode: ‘Multiplayer Fairness: In multiplayer races, the framerate is limited to ensure fair play for everyone.’
Many players are complaining under the post and explain that one does not buy a gaming PC for 2,000 euros just to play at only 60 FPS.
High framerate makes the game smoother and allows better aiming
Why is framerate so important? Simply put: The higher the framerate (FPS) in the game, the smoother the gameplay seems to you. Especially games like shooters or racing games benefit from high framerates because you can move or aim better.
One player explains that in GTA Online (in the title image) with a higher FPS, you would have a higher top speed, thus gaining an advantage over other players.
What “disadvantage” comes with a high framerate?: Those who want to achieve high framerates need correspondingly powerful hardware. Particularly if you want to play at high resolutions (WQHD or 4K) as well.
Many people consciously buy expensive hardware so that games not only look great but also achieve high framerates.
Because with a high-end graphics card like the GeForce RTX 4090, you generally achieve significantly higher FPS than with a GTX 1060 or a Radeon RX 580. One user explains the changes on reddit quite incredulously that it is frustrating when the expensive hardware doesn’t bring any advantage:
Wow, yes, that is really not cool. I understand the idea, but I paid a lot of money for good hardware, and if in the end [the hardware] turns out to be pretty useless, it would definitely be frustrating.
Players mock: With FPS lock, one just wants to avoid physics problems
Why does Forza do this? The developers have implemented an FPS lock in Forza: Motorsport to enable precise lap times for fair timing across different devices.
However, some players mock that this is due to the broken engine of the game: Because as soon as you play with a high framerate, the physics would change so significantly that you would have a clear advantage over other players. Especially consoles that are locked to 60 FPS would then be at a disadvantage.
Pros rely on high FPS: To take advantage of high numbers, many pros play only with low details. But there are also other reasons why pro players forgo graphical fireworks:
The best shooter pros in the world play with the worst graphics – you should do that too
