The next Star Wars Battlefront could have a single-player campaign.
At EA, studio head Patrick Soderlund spoke about Star Wars Battlefront to investors. The point that still seems to be a concern is the decision to forgo a single-player campaign.
This was a conscious decision at the time, also to complete the game in time for the movie release. Battlefront also sold well, opened up new buyer segments, and was a success, but the lack of a campaign also drew a lot of criticism: Star Wars Battlefront currently stands at around 75 on Metacritic.
“I believe the team developed a really great game under the conditions we had. I would say the game has done very well for us and reached a different target audience than a traditional EA game. From that perspective, it is a success. Are we happy with the 75 rating? No. Is that something we want to address in the future? Definitely.”
Soderlund further mentioned that future shooters need to be deeper and wider to keep players engaged for a long time. He believes that for a game to become “truly great,” it is best to develop a campaign and multiplayer components. If you were to build something like that again, you would need to make a “course correction.”
