Everyone has their own goal in League of Legends. For most, the goal is simply to have fun or even climb the leaderboards. A Reddit user was led by his personal LoL goal to a better life.
What terrible addiction did the user have? The Reddit user LeagueSchmeague posted in the subreddit for League of Legends about his drug addiction. He describes how he lost his relationship, job, and self-confidence due to the substances (see reddit.com).
Previously, the user only played LoL for fun, but after a while, he decided to become a bit more competitive and aim for the rank of Diamond. While grinding, LeagueSchmeague realized that he could even go higher if it weren’t for the drugs.
How did he escape the addiction and reach the highest rank? LeagueSchmeague writes in his story that he noticed how he got better and better and little by little reached for the drugs less. He himself says the following:
I know it sounds like a stupid reason, but when I was high, I couldn’t play well at all, and it really bothered me because I had made good progress and a day without playing was a lost day for me.
While he was still without a job, he used the time to reach the highest rank in League of Legends, which he achieved in July 2025. Now that he is Challenger in LoL, the player wants to focus more on his life since he no longer feels the urge to grind or use drugs.

Riot employees are proud of the player
What were the reactions from Riot employees? Below LeagueSchmeague’s Reddit post, even a community manager from Riot commented and wrote the following about his achievements, both in the game and in real life (see reddit.com):
Hell man, congratulations on staying clean and reaching Challenger!
Both of those things are impressive on their own, but both at the same time is truly crazy. I believe in you, OP!
LeagueSchmeague thanked him for the kind words and shared another story with the Riot employee and the community: He also met a Riot employee in real life and told him the same story.
As a reward for his perseverance and achievement, the Riot employee gifted him the Fist-Bump skin for the ward in LoL, to see enemy champions even in the shadows. The user LeagueSchmeague further decided to lead a life without substances forever.
League of Legends is known for its rather toxic community, but there are occasionally individual cases that prove the opposite. Besides the fight against drugs, there are also love stories in Riot’s MOBA. A player had a terrible experience in a LoL match and a year later fell in love with his tormentor: “Flamed me more than any other person” – LoL player meets his tormentor and falls in love
