The Adepta Sororitas, a sisterhood with superpowers
Admittedly, the Sororitas are not a particularly unknown faction and are again part of the Imperium, but they are my personal favorite and an order that more people should know about. The Adepta Sororitas are after all the female counterpart to Space Marines with similar powers, even though they are “only human”.
Women cannot become Space Marines, but they can still pass the entrance examinations of the Adeptus Astartes. In such cases, they are often referred to the Adepta Sororitas, an order of fanatical women who can work holy powers through their faith in the Emperor himself – sometimes even resurrect from the dead.
The most famous members of the Adepta Sororitas are the “Sisters of Battle”, the fighting arm of the order and the overall Ecclesiarchy. As an interesting fact: the order was formed because the church did not want “men under arms”. Women were never mentioned.
However, the Sororitas are not just composed of the fighting troops of the Seraphim and Co., but also fulfill other important roles within the Imperium:
- Hospitalis are often nurses, medics, doctors, and surgeons.
- Heretical and xenos texts are handled by the linguists and translators of the Dialogus.
- The noble houses of the Imperium receive support from the Famulus through advising and diplomacy.
- The Pronatus curate and safeguard important artifacts and relics.
Officially, the Sororitas are considered incorruptible by Chaos, and in fact, there are only a few known cases – and those were quickly covered up, sometimes by surgical adjustments by another sister to even visually replace the fallen.
In addition to the factions and species here, there are many more peoples in Warhammer 40,000 that exist in the eternal war for the galaxy – sometimes in truly absurd size. Who would win in a direct battle is explained here: All major factions of Warhammer 40,000 in the power ranking – Who could dominate the galaxy?
