Space Dwarfs who were once humans and now use forbidden technology
The latest complete faction in Warhammer 40,000 is the conglomerates of Votann, which fundamentally consist of two species: Squats – or “Kyn”, as they call themselves – and the Eisenkyn:
- Squats are “meta-humans”, mutants who are tolerated within the Imperium. Due to high gravity on the worlds where they live, their physiology has changed so much that they have become smaller and stockier – like dwarves from fantasy stories.
- The Eisenkyn are rational Rooters, artificial intelligences, and thus something that is strictly prohibited in the Imperium. In the conglomerates, they are equal members of society.
The Squats – or these Squats – were even once part of the Imperium and belonged to expeditions that lost contact. Over many millennia of isolation, an independent people has developed from them, with a certain love-hate relationship with the Imperium.
In a casual sense, you have with the conglomerates of Votann “space dwarfs” with advanced technology and everything that defines dwarfs: masterful craftsmanship, an almost unhealthy obsession with mining, and ancestor worship.
Especially interesting: As a model for society, roughly the Vikings serve, similar to the Space Wolves, only without the superhuman connotation. You can find more on this in our special on the conglomerates: In Warhammer 40,000, there are space dwarfs that are significantly tougher than in Deep Rock Galactic
