Sony has introduced the official earbuds for the PS5 in a very short teaser. There isn’t much information yet, but MeinMMO editor Benedikt Schlotmann is sure: If two important things are true, the product can only be good.
Sony officially brings new hardware for the PS5, including a new dedicated audio device for the PS5: wireless earbuds, meaning in-ear headphones that fit into one’s ears. This is the first time Sony presents in-ear headphones for a game console. Until now, there have only been over-ear headsets, like the Inzone series or the official PS5 headset.
Why is this a big topic for me? Many wireless in-ear headphones cannot be easily connected to the PS5, have an annoyingly high latency, or do not provide options for sound customization. This is also because the PS5 officially does not support foreign Bluetooth devices or only with workaround solutions.
I have now tested and tried several in-ear headphones and have two points that are really important to me beyond sound.
Ergonomics and battery life are key points
Especially two things must fit, if you disregard good sound, which the headphones hopefully provide. At least Sony has good audio experts who have already shown what you can achieve with dynamic, balanced, and very fine sound with in-ear headphones, like the WF-1000XM4.

Point 1: On one hand, there’s ergonomics. Anyone who has ever had poorly fitting in-ears knows: These things can hurt like hell after a few hours, and you just want to rip them out of your ears.
And ergonomics is always a constant topic for me. The sound can be fantastic, powerful, and immersive – but if my ears are bleeding, there’s no fun in that. For me, as long as the sound isn’t perfect, the fit is decent.
You could argue: Why buy headphones if the sound isn’t good? But I would counter: What good is great sound if the ergonomics are just terrible?
Point 2: On the other hand, battery life is a big topic for me. The well-informed Tom Henderson mentions around 5 hours of battery life (via insider-gaming.com). That is quite sufficient for headphones if you don’t want to play the entire evening with them.
A fast charging function could also be a plus. Many devices with such a feature promise: After 30 minutes of charging, you can play for another 2 hours.
At least here, I hope for an exciting product that is supposed to hit the market sometime by the end of 2023. How good it will actually be, we will see in the end.
More tech for the PS5: The outlook isn’t quite as good for the new handheld. Because “Project Q” has already caused a lot of annoyance among viewers. You can read why the product is so controversial on MeinMMO:
