Name changes for PS4 users in the PSN are now possible. However, this does not work smoothly. In extreme cases, you may lose entire game progress or in-game currency. We show you affected games.
This is what the changes are about: Since April 11, all users in the PlayStation Network can change their names, that is, the PSN IDs. The first change is free of charge.
Many players are happy to finally detach themselves from old names that they can no longer identify with.
Here, changes can lead to problems: Sony stated that not all games support these changes. On the contrary, extreme problems could arise.
- Game saves with save data, leaderboard data, or trophy progress could be lost
- Parts of games and applications might not work as expected – this affects both online and offline activities
- You could lose access to content. This includes paid content as well as extras and virtual currencies
Sony states that, in their estimation, this could only occur in a very small number of games for the PlayStation consoles. However, they explicitly warn if you want to change your name.
Which games have serious issues with a name change in the PSN?
In the following games, Sony concluded that a name change brings serious issues.
It is recommended not to change your PSN ID if you want to continue playing one of the listed games afterwards. Otherwise, permanent errors may occur or data may be lost.
| Disc Jam | MLB The Show 16 |
| Everybody’s Golf | MLB The Show 15 |
| Just Dance 2017 | ONRUSH |
| LittleBigPlanet 3 | The Golf Club 2 |
| MLB 14 The Show | Worms Battlegrounds |
Another list shows games that might also encounter problems due to a name change, but these are not as extreme.
Games with issues after a name change in the PSN
Sony differentiates between serious and non-serious problems that a name change can cause. In this case, the non-serious issues are:
- Your and other players’ old online ID is still displayed or is no longer visible. Logging out and logging back in the game could help
- PlayStation user accounts might be removed from the game accounts. If you re-link them, the original link might be restored
- Some game settings, such as audio or controller settings, could be reset. Logging out and back into the game could restore the original settings

The following games displayed one or more of the mentioned issues during Sony’s testing:
| Absolver: Downfall | Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite |
| Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag | MLB The Show 17 |

Which games work without issues after the name change in the PSN?
During Sony’s testing, many games showed no problems after a name change. For this, there is a large list on the PlayStation website.

Normally, all games released on or after April 1, 2018, should have no issues with name changes. In the beta phase of PSN ID changes, however, one game experienced problems that was not fully compatible with the change.
In some cases, errors can occur even if the game should actually be compatible.
