A person steals an expensive Ferrari. But a set of AirPods becomes his downfall. And another mistake leads to the police being able to identify him.
A thief had stolen a Ferrari 812 GTS worth $575,000 in the USA. That is roughly around 520,000 euros. But in the end, it wasn’t the car itself that led to his capture, but another item in the car: A set of AirPods that the owner had left in the vehicle. This is reported by the magazine Applesfera.com.
AirPods become a secret weapon against car thieves
What is special about the AirPods? If you’ve forgotten your iPhone, your AirPods, or another Apple device, you can track them. To do this, you use the “Find My” app. Here, all your devices are typically registered with an approximate location.
A similar function is also available for AirTags, which you can use to tag items like luggage or a keychain, so you can find them again. A YouTuber, for instance, used an AirTag to find out if DHL really ships his packages to North Korea or if it is just a trick.
What mistakes did the thief make? And exactly this function became a problem for the thief. The police used the Find My app to locate the AirPods, which led them directly to the stolen Ferrari. The vehicle was tracked to a location near a gas station, but the thief fled when he saw the police.
But he made a second mistake: He left his own iPhone in the stolen Ferrari. Due to this oversight, the police were able to identify the thief and later apprehend him. Incidentally, the person is a well-known repeat offender in the city who targets high-priced vehicles.
