A person bought an old iPhone for over 160,000 euros. But why would someone spend so much money on an old device? The seller describes the device as the ‘Holy Grail“ among mobile phone collectors.
If any of you had 160,000 euros sitting in your bank account, you would probably buy a new car, pay off a loan for your house, or go on a very long vacation.
A user has now purchased an iPhone from 2007 for 190,000 US dollars (approximately 169,000 euros). But why would someone spend so much money on a 16-year-old model?
The iPhone model is very rare because it was discontinued after just 2 months
Originally, two different versions of the iPhone model were released:
- A model with 4 GB of storage for 499 US dollars
- A second model with 8 GB of storage for 599 US dollars.
However, especially high prices are paid today for the model with 4 GB. Many people bought the 8 GB model directly at release, and the smaller iPhone sold much worse.
Apple discontinued the production of the 4 GB version after just 2 months, and therefore these models are quite rare. It is not surprising that a sealed, like-new iPhone with 4 GB from 2007 is sold for a record sum of 190,000 US dollars.
Allegedly, the device sold here comes from the old Apple development team. The sales platform also describes the old Apple phone as the ‘Holy Grail’ among phone collectors.
Collectors like to spend a lot of money on valuable pieces
Not only in the tech area do collectors spend a lot of money on phones, old consoles, or accessories. Pokémon cards are also sold for large amounts if they are still in original packaging or if they belong to a special series. For example, a card with a Fortnite skin was auctioned for a lot of money.
A special game card was created with the help of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a nonprofit organization that fulfills wishes for seriously ill children. However, the owner of the card now wants to sell it and could make a lot of money:
