SOL Shogunate is an upcoming action RPG on Steam and the debut work of Chaos Manufacturing. MeinMMO editor Nikolas Hernes was able to speak with the CEO and the Game Director of the studio. They also discussed the scientific background of the sci-fi game and the moon.
What is SOL Shogunate? At the PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted on December 4, 2025, SOL Shogunate was presented for the first time. It is the upcoming debut work of Chaos Manufacturing, a new studio consisting of industry veterans who have worked on titles such as Horizon, Witcher 3, League of Legends, or Killzone.
Gameplay-wise, the action RPG is set to focus on fast combat, diverse combat options, and cinematic boss fights. Visually and story-wise, SOL Shogunate takes place in an alternative future, where humanity also lives in space and a shogun inspired by feudal Japan rules.
In the interview with CEO Guy Costantini and Game Director Leszek Sczepanski, I was able to discuss the science fiction in the game. Although it may not be immediately obvious, a lot of thought has gone into the science aspect of the game.
Sci-Fi, but with rules
What does GUY Costantini say about the scientific aspects? In the trailer and the information about the game, the moon is often mentioned, which is why I asked both of them why they selected it as such a special place for the game.
Initially, Guy explained that the moon is essential to even access space in the game. He added that they tried to align themselves with reality. They worked with people from NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (a lab that builds and operates space probes and satellites). They dealt with science in general:
We were inspired by some works of Japanese space agencies and Japanese universities that deal with how to live on the moon without suffering a massive loss of bone density.
In this context, Guy talks about the concept of Lunar Glasses: These are large, rotating cities in moon craters that are protected from micrometeoroids and simulate gravity through centrifugal force. This is intended to enable the ecosystems we see in the trailer.
He compares it with films like Elysium or Interstellar, but they have “relocated it to the moon and connected it by a railway, as is common in Asia.”
In general, Guy emphasizes that they want to be more grounded and focus on what researchers think about how to live in space. It should not be a future hundreds of years away like in Dune:
And suddenly there are these space guilds snorting spice to teleport. Again, nothing against the film, I love “Dune”, but at the same time, it’s so far in the future that there are no rules, and we wanted it to have rules.
The moon is also supposed to be an exciting place for the story of SOL Shogunate
What does Game Director Leszek Sczepanski say about the moon? In the interview, Game Director Leszek mentioned another point regarding the moon. Within the story, it will be about lies and mysteries, and as a player, you have to find the “truth behind the truth”.
The moon is “a great place for such a story because if you know a little about astronomy, the moon is something very strange, a very unusual celestial body, and we still do not fully understand why and how and what. So it already holds many secrets. But it is also the celestial body outside Earth that we know the most about.”
He describes it as “the perfect setting” because it is a familiar place that also hides secrets.
What else Guy and Leszek told us about SOL Shogunate will be revealed in the coming days in the full interview. Until then, you can check out another upcoming action RPG: Shadowheart from Baldur’s Gate 3 has a new role, slicing through a new action RPG on PS5 in a destroyed London
