What happens in the online pirate game Sea of Thieves when your crew leaves you behind somewhere? There is an interesting answer to this.
Sea of Thieves looks like it would be a lot of fun, but fun in online games largely depends on who you play with. A well-coordinated crew that you can rely on is essential to having a good time. Playing with people who don’t take things seriously, create trouble, or sabotage your own team can make it challenging.

The friendly mermaid helps
Therefore, the question arose: What happens when a ship sets sail while you are not yet on board? Will you be left behind by your crew?
At E3, producer Joe Neate provided the answer: “A friendly mermaid appears to take you back to the ship.” Considering that teamwork is essential, this is a good mechanic. Team members cannot be left behind, making it more difficult for sabotage against your own crew.
Griefing will be minimized
As the alpha tests show, such mechanics are important. Griefing, or annoying fellow players, is something the developers want to minimize as much as possible.
However, that is not always easy in online games with many freedoms. Therefore, the alpha phases are also used to see where griefers find opportunities to disturb and annoy other players. The team then considers countermeasures, such as the appearance of mermaids when a crew member might be stranded somewhere.
Sea of Thieves will be released in early 2018 for Windows 10 PCs and Xbox One.
