Rare plant changes in Sea of Thieves, driven by player complaints. Cage abuse, spawn kills, and more.
In Sea of Thieves, players are often put in the ship’s prison. This is a small cell below deck that essentially serves as a cage. Players cannot cause damage in it and have virtually no influence on the game. This feature is often abused. When crews get an additional player in their group through matchmaking, a random, they immediately put him in prison. But that might soon come to an end.
Rare brings Invite-Only Crews
The prison in Sea of Thieves is exploited by crews to their advantage. Often it involves players who want to keep a spot on the ship open for friends. Through matchmaking, other players are assigned to a crew. If the crew prefers to play privately, they put the random player in prison so that he loses his fun in the session and looks for a new match. He gets bullied out. Pirates are often also thrown in prison because they speak another language or do not have a microphone.
Here democracy wins – The crew votes on who should go to jail. If the majority is in favor, you have no choice. These prison problems also occurred during the beta of the game.
Developer Rare has now revealed that they want to address this problem. In a blog post, the team announces that players will soon be able to choose whether
- their ship should be open to matchmaking with random players
- or closed, allowing only invited players to join the crew
This aims to tackle the main reasons for the abuse of the ship prison. Furthermore, it will allow players to have the option to travel with larger crews on the sloop or with smaller crews on the galleon.
Further planned changes from community feedback
Furthermore, the blog post states that players currently have no control over who they play with – An exception is made for friends. However, players with microphones and/or those who speak the same language are preferred.
The Sea of Thieves team now wants to match players automatically based on microphone status. Players with microphones will be matched with other pirates who can also speak.
Additionally, they are working on the option to search for teammates by language. This way, you can find teammates who speak your language.
In the blog post about the top feedback points, it also discusses cheaters that need to be swiftly removed from the game. Furthermore, a video from the Sea of Thieves team will be released next week discussing the future plans for the game.
In the last update of Sea of Thieves, they already addressed a nasty griefer tactic
