The Frostkeep Studios, consisting of former Blizzard employees, aim to develop an online game Rend that is a mix of MMO and survival game, but brings fresh air to this area.
The Frostkeep Studios announced the new survival MMO Rend at Pax East. Developers who previously worked on World of Warcraft (WoW), League of Legends (LoL), WildStar, and other titles are working on Rend.
Survival games are currently so popular among developers that some players are already fearing that the market could be flooded with such titles.
So the announced survival MMO Rend has a tough road ahead. However, the developers are aware of the situation and aim to offer a player experience that differs from other survival games.
What is Rend? MMORPG meets Survival and MOBA
In the game, you create a hero from the classes Assassin, Mystic, Survivalist, and Soldier and must join one of the factions that are fighting for supremacy in the world. This is the core of the online game. The parties, consisting of about 20 to 30 players, must achieve victory within a specified time.
A new season begins afterward, in which you may take over your hero. You do not have to start completely from scratch again. However, your skills are no longer available to you. Players are to always meet on equal footing. Just because someone has played seven seasons does not mean they are automatically better than someone who is new.
The world is divided into three valleys, belonging to the three factions Conclave, Order, and Revenant. In each valley, there is a so-called Divinity Stone. In this, the party collects souls. This stone must be destroyed to kick the faction out of the season, thus introducing MOBA elements into the game. However, destroying the stone is not easy.
Your valley should not remain unprotected. After all, the third faction could launch an attack while the warriors are in battle. Additionally, monsters roam through the world, further complicating matters. Crafting weapons and equipment is just as important as gathering resources.
The clock is ticking …
To achieve your goal, you should also explore the world. For you can find hidden artifacts that are particularly powerful and help you destroy your enemies. You must always proceed tactically in the survival MMO Rend. Your valley and your Divinity Stone must be protected, but you should also ensure to eliminate an enemy party.
How much time do you spend gathering resources and crafting weapons? It is also always worth considering whether to search for artifacts. All of this takes time, which counts down incessantly. When it reaches 0, the Reckoning event begins.
Then your base will be vulnerable to everything and everyone, and the mysterious Lost will appear, aiming to destroy all other parties. The winning faction will be rewarded with Meta-Progression Points. You use these in the next season to unlock new customizations and upgrades for your hero. Additionally, players will have the opportunity to set up their own servers with their own rules. A release date for Rend has not yet been determined, but the developers plan to start an early access phase this spring.
