The upcoming survival MMO Rend does not want to be like other representatives of the genre, but to represent the next step. What World of Warcraft was compared to Everquest.
According to the developers of Rend – who previously worked on World of Warcraft, Wildstar and League of Legends – there is currently a lack of a new WoW in the survival MMO genre. ARK: Survival Evolved would sit on the throne here, but all other titles in the genre would lack the evolution that World of Warcraft brought compared to Everquest.
ARK is therefore currently the “Everquest” of survival MMOs, and with Rend, the “World of Warcraft” is meant to follow.
A compressed survival game
With Rend, the five developers who are currently working in-house on the game want to take what works well in survival MMOs and leave out the rest, especially the weaknesses.
A survival game would always promise so many big things. Players could band together to create huge castles and then battle other groups of players. But basically, it would only look like everyone is sitting in their mud huts and there is a large guild that controls everything. Trying to take them on would almost never work.
Therefore, the gameplay in Rend will be a bit different. And this is where the MOBA elements come into play. Each faction consists of about 20 players who explore the wilderness for resources to build a base together. But time is ticking, and each week the Reckoning event takes place, in which players fight each other to destroy the enemy’s base.
In between building and gathering as well as smaller skirmishes are on the agenda. Then there is a reset, and everything starts anew. There is no possibility for a guild to “settle” and control everything.
Rend wants to bake its own cake
The survival aspect, namely surviving in a wilderness full of monsters and hostile players, gathering resources and building a base, is still given – only strongly compressed by the time limit, so that really the cool things like building a castle and sieges can happen relatively quickly. The team behind Rend hopes to combine the fun gameplay elements of an MMORPG, a MOBA, and a survival game.
The developers do not want to make the next World of Warcraft to get a piece of that cake. They prefer to bake their own cake and use some familiar ingredients, hoping that it will taste really good to the players.
