In response to Reddit’s actions, the developers of Minecraft announced that Mojang will no longer publish official content on Reddit. Fans show understanding but also regret the decision.
- In early June, Reddit announced that it would make changes regarding third-party apps. As a result, numerous moderators shut down their subreddits in protest.
- The head of Reddit responded dismissively – but at the same time issued a warning to his employees.
Minecraft is the best-selling game of all time. It was developed by Mojang Studios, a Swedish developer studio that has been part of Microsoft since 2014.
Reddit is one of the primary sources of information and a link between the developers of Minecraft and the players.
The developers use the platform, among other things, for exchanges, and they inform there about new features and updates. However, the platform is no longer a suitable place for them.
The Swede Markus Alexej “Notch” Persson developed Minecraft on his own:
Why is Reddit no longer a suitable place for the developers of Minecraft? Minecraft’s Java Tech Lead addressed the players in the Minecraft subreddit. His post on Reddit has currently received over 13,000 upvotes.
He writes there:
As you may have heard, Reddit management recently introduced changes that have led to rule and moderation changes in many subreddits. Due to these changes, we believe that Reddit is no longer a suitable place to publish official content or refer our players there.
We would like to thank you for all the feedback and discussions in which you participated in previous changelog threads. You are of course still warmly invited to create unofficial update threads. However, if you want to reach the team with feedback about the game, please visit our feedback website at feedback.minecraft.net or contact us through one of our official social media channels.

“The End of an Era”
This is how the community reacts: The community reacts with understanding. DamageBooster writes: “Understandable. What other good places are there to read the changelogs as soon as they are published?” and receives nearly 4,000 upvotes.
Many use the post to exchange possible alternatives for getting news about updates and fixes. Among other things, Discord is suggested. bozrdang notes: “Discord is not searchable via internet search engines.”
SonicwaveMC wishes for a Minecraft forum: “I personally would appreciate it if the Minecraft forum (or another forum in the old style) would be used again, but I doubt this will ever happen.”
FoxFired calls it the “end of an era.” Kyyndle responds: “It is quite understandable why Mojang made this decision, but it is still very disappointing to see that.”
This is how big the Minecraft subreddit is: The Minecraft subreddit, created in June 2009, has 7.4 million followers.
To draw a comparison: The subreddit r/leagueoflegends has 6.4 million members, while the World of Warcraft subreddit has 2.3 million followers. r/StardewValley has 1.5 million members, r/Terraria has 1.2 million.
Some players have apparently even leveraged Minecraft into their current professions: Fans talk about skills they’ve learned thanks to gaming.
