What kind of update is this? A few weeks ago, Rockstar Games announced a major update for the online mode of RDR2, Red Dead Online. A major focus of this update is the three new roles that players can pursue as bounty hunters, traders, or collectors.
All roles must be unlocked and bring new activities to the online world. For each role, you unlock new features such as a prisoner transport or a material wagon.
Players were already curious about the role system. Red Dead Online was often criticized for having too little content. The new roles now bring variety back into the online world.
In the “Frontier Pursuits” update, you will find not only the new roles and their corresponding activities but also new items and abilities. There are also some gameplay improvements, new ability cards, daily challenges, emotes, and other game adjustments.

Bounty Hunter, Collector, Trader – What do the roles bring?
What do the new roles bring? You can unlock and use the roles individually or several at once. On each path, you will experience unique experiences and unlock exclusive rewards – including items, weapons, clothing, horses, and more.
The Bounty Hunter
Your task: Once you unlock this role, you will hunt criminals on the map of Red Dead Online. Dead or alive is the motto.
Where to unlock it? At the legendary bounty hunter in Rhodes, you can get the bounty hunter license by paying 15 gold bars. Anyone who linked their social club account to Twitch Prime by September 8, will even receive the license for free.
The gameplay: With the license, you have the opportunity to take on the trails of criminals who are wanted by sheriff offices, postmasterries, or train stations across the country. Once you have progressed enough in rank, you can even track down other players with appropriately high bounties.
Abilities and items: By leveling up, you will unlock various abilities or objects. Here are a few of them:
- Concentration: Targets appear red in Eagle Eye
- Reinforced lasso: A lasso made of reinforced rope to securely bind wanted individuals
- Ducking: Duck to protect yourself while riding
- Bola: A throwing weapon that wraps around the legs of wanted individuals
- Bounty hunter wagon: A wagon that can safely transport wanted individuals
- Ambidextrous weapon whirl: Perform a weapon whirl trick with two equipped pistols or revolvers
The Trader
Your task: You produce valuable goods for sale with the help of camp companion Cripps and build up a business.
Where to unlock it? Go to the local postmastery. There you will find a message from Cripps. In this message, you will learn how to enter a partnership with him and his trading company. The start begins with investing in a butcher table. PS4 players receive it for free, while Xbox players pay 15 gold bars for it.
The gameplay: You gather animal carcasses, pelts, or parts from the online world. Also supplies that can either be ordered or unlocked in supply missions. Once you have gathered enough, Cripps will begin production. Afterwards, you sell the goods. Deliveries over longer distances are better paid.
Abilities and items: With the progress of your experience as a trader, you will unlock among other things the following items and objects:
- Improvement of the ingredient bag: Carry more items in your ingredient bag
- Dog warning: Teach your dog to warn you of camp raids
- Weapon case: Store weapons for later use
- Throwing knife: A custom-made knife that is only available to traders
- Hunting wagon: A sturdy wagon for transporting multiple carcasses, skins, and furs
- Protection: Reduces the likelihood of camp raids
The Collector
Your task: As a collector, you always look to the left and right of the road on your travels and search for valuable treasures like lost jewelry. If you enjoy exploring the world, this role will suit you well.
Where to unlock it? You unlock the collector role with the mysterious traveling merchant Madam Nazar. This costs the usual 15 gold bars. If you want to unlock the role for free, you can do so with this treasure hunt for the 54 hidden playing cards in GTA Online.
The gameplay: Once you have the collector’s bag, you will receive a map with markings for collectibles in the world. Each week, collectors receive a new list of items they can find in the frontier. Some locations are obvious, while for others you may need to search cabinets or drawers.
Collected items can be sold individually or as a set at Madam Nazar.
Abilities and items: For sales, you rank up and unlock the following items among others:
- Potential: Discover disturbed earth mounds using Eagle Eye
- Pennington-Field shovel: An essential tool for digging up collectibles
- Refined binoculars: A special binocular that makes excavation sites visible from a distance
- Metal detector: An important tool that helps in finding buried collectibles
- Horse support: Collect herbs while riding
- Lantern for the horse: Illuminates the path ahead with a lantern that attaches to your horse’s breastplate
Gameplay changes in the update of September 10 in Red Dead Online
New events in Free-Roam: You can now participate in the four new events Bounty Hunt, Judgment Day, Salvage, and Trade Route.
- Bounty Hunt is a co-op event where you bring back as many fleeing prisoners as possible
- Judgment Day designates the player who scored the most points by capturing target persons as the winner
- In Salvage , players try to find the loot from a wreck together
- In Trade Route , you defend a train full of supplies against waves of enemies
Quests and ability cards: Additionally, you can expect new daily quests that will be unlocked for you. Existing ability cards have been improved and expanded with new, role-specific tasks.
Appearance adjustment: You can now change your character’s appearance for free. The first change is free, after that it costs a fee.
Weapons and balancing
What’s new? The game now features many new weapons, ammunition, and gear. Additionally, the balancing has been revised. Weapon damage has been adjusted to make fights faster and reduce the consistent use of headshots in PvP
- Firearms cause more damage
- The damage from headshots at long range has been reduced
- High-velocity ammunition increases the chances of a critical headshot at long distance
