PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds will deliver new content later this year that is meant to captivate players. According to the developers, they have taken players’ wishes to heart – and have focused on large maps.
This is the approach of the PUBG developers: In an announcement, the developers of the Battle Royale reached out to their players and shared what new maps are currently in the works: “A constant piece of feedback that we have heard quite extensively is the desire for us to focus more on larger maps, especially after a year that has mainly focused on smaller maps,” they explain.
Last year, for example, they introduced maps like the small, fast-paced “Haven” map including nasty NPC enemies. It featured vertical gameplay and gave returning players in PUBG quite a workout.
After these experiences and experiments with small maps, they have taken “the time to focus on what we know that many of our core audience appreciate the most. 2021 is the year of the large map and will be in more than one way.”
The plan looks as follows: Two new maps are to be added to the game, while one old map will be revamped.
Tiger, Kiki, and a new Miramar: This is how the maps are shaping up
These are the 2 new maps: The first new map currently in development is called “Codename: Tiger.” This is the first 8 x 8 kilometer map within 3 years in PUBG. It therefore matches the largest maps so far, Erangel and Miramar.
Tiger will also have a feature that has increasingly spread in the Battle Royale world: Respawns when you have already supposedly died – for example, in Duos and Squads. In CoD: Warzone, for instance, you can return through the Gulag, and in Fortnite, there is a return via special buses. Now, the new PUBG map Tiger will also bring an appropriate feature.
Besides “Tiger,” another 8 x 8 map will find its way into PUBG: Codename “Kiki.” It is planned to be released at the end of 2021 / beginning of 2022 as the fourth 8×8 map overall. A particularly diverse map is planned here.
Places such as:
- Underground laboratories
- Skyscrapers
- Swamps
- Subways
- Underwater buildings
However, they are still in the planning phase here. The plans for a remaster of the map Miramar, which is supposed to be released before the new maps, are already more concrete.
This is what the revamped Miramar looks like: The old 8 x 8 map Miramar is set to receive a whole range of upgrades. These include things that have already been implemented on newer maps:
- Improved lighting and graphics
- Performance
- Topography and special features
Among other things, the textures of buildings and landscapes will be adjusted. At the same time, unnecessary obstacles that hindered fast movement on the map will be removed. Additionally, cliffs will be added that better match the vertical playstyle that was applied in PUBG last year.
The remaster of Miramar is set to go online with Season 12.1, which is scheduled for June. Additional content such as new weapons and vehicles is also expected then.
The fact that PUBG now wants to work with larger maps does not come without reason. In an interview with MeinMMO, Creative Director Dave Curd explained earlier this year what makes the maps in PUBG special.
