MeinMMO author Niko Hernes is a big Borderlands fan and has also invested hundreds of hours of gameplay in Overwatch since its release. However, both Borderlands 3 and Overwatch 2 have left him disappointed. A new shooter roguelite for the PS5, featuring many weapons and characters, gives him back the feeling of the past.
What game is it? Gunfire Reborn is a Chinese game that mixes mechanics from hero shooters like Overwatch with the countless crazy weapons of Borderlands. All packaged in a roguelite structure, it provides a fantastic mix that every fan of colorful shooters should check out.
The 4-player coop offers an alternative for those who were disappointed by the Overwatch PvE mode. You can choose from various characters in the form of anthropomorphic animals. These have active abilities, and during a run, you can choose from specializations that either enhance your abilities or improve handling with various weapons.
Weapons are also the right keyword, as they have various bonuses and affixes like in the loot shooter, which change with each newly found weapon. This allows you to try out a new build in every run, ensuring variety.
After each run, you can upgrade characters in general or specific ones, as is now customary in roguelite genre games. Here you can watch a trailer:
Hundreds of hours with crazy weapons and lots of shooting
Why do I love the game? The first run in the game felt like home. I felt like I did back in Borderlands 2. You blast your way through the first rooms with the starting weapon, and suddenly weapons drop that are enjoyable and varied to play. There are bows, shotguns, rifles, and much more that is familiar from the shooter genre.
But it also gets much crazier. Weapons like a small dragon that spits fireballs, or a needle that continuously attacks enemies you aim at, always provide refreshing variety.
The abilities of the various characters are clearly inspired by games like Overwatch or Borderlands, but they integrate perfectly with the weapons into the roguelite structure. The colorful cel-shading visuals are also the perfect visual accompaniment to it.
But the sweet visuals are a bit deceptive, as Gunfire Reborn is not an easy game and demands quite a bit even on the easiest difficulty level. For those who want it even harder, new difficulty levels are also unlocked that test your skills and knowledge of the game.
As in every good roguelite, you want to start another run after each one to try out new builds or discover new weapons.
How much does the game cost? On Steam, the game has been available for some time, while it was only released on PS5 in June 2023. For €19.99, the game offers you hundreds of hours of colorful shooting action, and anyone missing exactly that from Borderlands and Overwatch should take a look here.
